SUMMARY The Patient Transporter / Medical Assistant supports safe, efficient patient movement throughout the Ambulatory Surgery Center and to transportation waiting areas outside the facility, while providing clinical and administrative assistance as directed. Patient transport is the primary function of this role. The ideal candidate is physically capable, dependable, comfortable working in varying indoor and outdoor environments, and committed to a patient-centered experience throughout the surgical care journey.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Patient Transport (Primary Function)
Safely transport patients throughout the ASC, including pre-operative, operative, post-operative, and discharge areas, using wheelchairs, stretchers, and other transport equipment.
Escort patients safely from the facility to exterior transportation waiting areas, including outdoor environments, upon discharge.
Assist patients with transfers to and from beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, and procedure tables using proper body mechanics and safe patient handling techniques.
Accompany patients through each transition point in the surgical care workflow, ensuring comfort, dignity, and safety at all times.
Communicate patient status, needs, and any observed changes in condition to nursing and clinical staff promptly.
Verify patient identity using approved patient identifiers prior to any transport or transfer.
Assist with patient positioning as directed by clinical staff and within scope.
Maintain transport equipment in clean, functional condition and report any equipment issues to the appropriate staff.
Clinical & Administrative Support Prepare exam rooms and clinical areas between patients, including cleaning, restocking supplies, and ensuring readiness for the next case.
Assist clinical staff with non-invasive patient care tasks as directed and within scope, including obtaining and documenting vital signs.
Support front desk and administrative workflows as directed, including patient check-in, chart preparation, and scheduling support.
Answer phones and route calls or questions to the appropriate staff member.
Communicate effectively with physicians, clinical staff, front desk, and patients throughout the day.
Support efficient patient flow and assist with ASC operations as directed by the clinical supervisor or ASC administrator.
Documentation & Compliance Accurately document patient transport activity and any relevant clinical observations per ASC policy.
Maintain compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, infection control standards, and Partner Care policies.
Follow Standard Precautions, hand hygiene, and PPE requirements at all times.
Immediately report patient safety concerns, changes in patient condition, or exposure incidents to supervising clinical staff.
Maintain required clinic logs as directed, including safety and equipment records.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent required.
Certificate of completion of a Medical Assistant program preferred; relevant clinical or patient care experience considered in lieu.
Current BLS/CPR certification required.
Prior experience in patient transport, patient care, or an ASC or hospital setting preferred.
Experience in pain management or surgical specialty care a plus.
Proficiency in EMR systems; eClinical
Works experience a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of safe patient handling techniques, proper body mechanics, and transfer protocols.
