Production Manager
Position Title: Green End Lead
Reports To: Green End/Dryer Supervisor
Department: Green Veneer
Hours per shift: 8+ (Day, Swing, Graveyard); two 10-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch
Wage: Level 5/6 (Pay based on highest level position they break and machine center competencies they possess)
Position
Purpose:
Assist supervisor or general foreman in the green veneer operations on a daily/shift basis. Break machine operators for the purpose of keeping production flowing.
- Utilize action planning to facilitate continuous improvement.
- Help train new and experienced employees to improve their job skills to enhance quality and productivity.
- Knows and understands quality management system being used at facility.
- Assist department supervisor/general foreman in directing employees in their daily safety, production and quality duties.
- Assist department supervisor/general foreman in daily, weekly and monthly safety training.
- Assist department supervisor/general foreman in product scheduling.
- Assist department supervisor/general foreman in crew breaks and meal periods.
- Assist department supervisor/general foreman in production paperwork and inventory control.
- Assist department supervisor/general foreman to complete employee daily, 30/90 day and yearly evaluations.
- Assist department supervisor/general foreman to complete all administrative duties and recordkeeping as outlined by the plant manager and HR department.
- Assist department supervisor/general foreman in responsibility for cleanup activity during shift and between shifts.
- Assist department supervisor/general foreman in responsibility for all safety occurrences being entered into Basic Safe and initiation of IIT.
- Assist department supervisor/general foreman in pre‑shift meetings to discuss assignments and plan for the shift.
- Assist maintenance personnel or coordinate employee assistance in basic maintenance procedures.
- Must learn to run department specific machinery for the purpose of giving breaks to the regular operators or possibly covering the entire shift if necessary.
- Learn optimization systems in department. Utilize these systems to help improve mill profitability.
- Assist department supervisor/general foreman in setting/adjusting sizes on machine centers by making adjustments to machine center program parameters.
- Assist department supervisor/general foreman in disciplinary process.
- Take the lead in safety. Assist department supervisor/general foreman to verify adequate safety training, coaching and proper tools to safely perform the job. Promote safety awareness, ensure proper use of lockout/tagout/lock‑out procedures and PPE, encourage good housekeeping, and respond to employee and safety committee concerns in a timely manner.
- Other duties as assigned.
Environmental exposure – inside 90% of the time: average temperature 65 °F, high 100 °F, and low 40 °F. Outside 10% of the time: average temperature 65 °F, high 100 °F, and low 30 °F. Noise or vibration – includes machine operation and nearby equipment such as forklifts. Atmospheric conditions – fumes: none, dust: present, mist: water, odors: green veneer, gases: none, poor ventilation: none.
Personal Protective Equipment Required(1) Eye protection. (2) Hearing protection. (3) Approved footwear. (4) High‑visibility clothing (when entering and exiting mill or while on the floor).
Physical DemandsLifting maximum weight without assistance: 50 lbs. Lifting over 50 lbs requires two or more people or lifting devices. Carrying maximum weight without assistance: 10–75 lbs. Carrying over 75 lbs requires two or more people or lifting devices.
Skills- Working knowledge of all green veneer manufacturing centers.
- Computer skills – experience with Excel, Word, and presentation software (PowerPoint).
- Excellent communication skills; both written and verbal with all levels of the company (hourly, supervisors, vendors, and management). Communication should be direct, non‑confrontational, and accurately assess areas needing improvement without exaggeration.
- Analytical skills – experience utilizing quality systems, statistical sampling, and data to identify trends.
- Training skills – ability to train, educate foremen, supervisors, leads and employees; present training via job guides, SOPs, and/or PowerPoint presentations.
- Tools – proficient with calipers, micrometer, and tape measure.
- Ability to work with little supervision; must be self‑directed in identifying and efficiently completing tasks.
- Use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, approved footwear).
- Knowledge and understanding of company safety policies, including those for visitors and contractors.
- Knowledge and understanding of company lockout procedures.
- Ability to recognize unsafe behaviors in employees and supervisors.
