Forklift Operator, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Position Title: General Plant Forklift (Mentor)
Reports To: Department Supervisor
Department: Dryers, Green Veneer, Layup
Hours per shift: Employee works 8‑hour shifts, 2 10‑minute breaks, 30‑minute unpaid lunch.
Shift times: Day: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM;
Swing: 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM;
Graveyard: 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM.
Wage: Level 3
Position PurposeSafely load/unload and transport material to and from machine centers. Safely stack/unstack units in designated storage bays.
Position Functions- Essential Functions – Visually inspect the forklift for leaks, damaged forks, excessive wear in steering, lift chains, tires and proper operation of brakes.
- Check fluid levels and fill to the mark.
- Utilize proper refueling procedures to safely fuel forklift.
- The worker may be required to rotate to different positions for cross training purposes or to facilitate production; other duties are outlined in individual job descriptions.
- Assist co‑workers or maintenance personnel in basic maintenance procedures.
- Perform other duties and functions as assigned by supervisor for production and cleaning purposes.
- Mostly indoors (80%) with average temperature 80°F, extremes 10°F–120°F; externals 20%.
- Noise and vibration from machines and forklifts.
- Hazards as detailed in Job Hazard Analysis.
- Worker stands on a slightly elevated wooden platform with rubber mats and moves opposite an elevated dry conveyor 3½–4 ft above ground.

Constant use of hearing and vision; frequent pushing, pulling, and reaching; occasional lifting or carrying over 50 lbs.
Skills- Excellent hand–eye coordination; continuous vision and hearing; peripheral vision.
- Reading and speech required to comprehend Job Hazard Analysis, lockout procedures, and safety training.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, self‑directed, prioritize, organize, and make decisions.
- Perform only maintenance you are trained to do; keep body away from machinery.
- Follow lockout/tagout procedures before maintenance.
- Use proper body mechanics; ask for help when lifting loads.
- Wear required PPE.
- Communicate with co‑workers, especially forklift drivers.
- Read and write during safety training.
Maximum weight lifted without assistance: 50 lbs (lifting >50 lbs requires 2+ people or devices).
Maximum weight carried without assistance: 10–50 lbs (carrying >50 lbs requires assistance or devices).
Pushing/Pulling force: up to 10–20 lbs.
