The Cardiac ICU (CICU) or Coronary ICU (CCU) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a 15-bed intensive care unit that specializes in the care of patients experiencing cardiogenic shock, myocardial infarction, heart failure, arrythmias, and cardiac arrest, among other diagnoses. The CICU nursing staff are highly skilled in the care for critically ill patients, and are trained to specialize in the care of specific devices, such as Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, Impella, and Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD), along with critical care lines and interventions such as Swan-Ganz catheters, arterial lines, central lines, ventilators, dialysis, and targeted temperature management.
Our CICU team consists of Cardiology Attendings, Fellows, Residents, Registered Nurses, Pharmacists, Patient Care Technicians, Unit Secretaries, Respiratory Therapists, Case Managers, and Social Workers. Our comprehensive multidisciplinary approach ensures we are taking the most excellent care of our patients and their families. Nurse to patient ratios are usually 1:2 or 1:1, depending on acuity.

Purpose:
Under the direction of manager, plans, directs, and coordinates activities of a unit on a designated shift. Performs direct patient care as needed and functions as clinical resource to nursing and support staff. Assesses, plans, evaluates and documents the nursing process of assigned unit as needed.
- Facilitates identification and resolution of gaps in care from hospitalization, at discharge, and into the ambulatory care setting. Critically assess patient data to proactively mitigate impending changes in condition and establishes consults to interprofessional team as appropriate.
- Leads the development and implementation of complex individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other members of the interprofessional team and the patient, family, or caregiver in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care. Plan of care reflects application of expert holistic clinical knowledge and skill to anticipate and prioritize complex care needs, anticipate barriers, incorporating interprofessional team and caregiver/family input, and identifies opportunities to improve patient outcomes.
