Barnes‑Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is a leading academic medical center in Missouri, consistently ranked among the nation’s top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. The Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) is a 15‑bed unit devoted to caring for patients with cardiogenic shock, myocardial infarction, heart failure, arrhythmias, and cardiac arrest. The nursing team collaborates with cardiology attendings, fellows, residents, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, case managers and social workers to deliver multidisciplinary, patient‑centered care.
Typical nurse‑to‑patient ratios on the unit are 1:1 or 1:2, depending on acuity.
Provides direct patient care activities—including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation—within the nursing care standards. Works in a safety‑sensitive environment requiring constant alertness and a safe manner of operation.
Responsibilities- Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment.
- Educates patients and families on illness management, post‑treatment home care needs and medication administration.
- Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance.
- Participates in professional development activities.
- Develops, implements, and documents individualized care plans with defined goals, collaborating with the interprofessional team, patients and families in accordance with established guidelines.
- Proactively plans and ensures communication of the care plan across the continuum of care.
- Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial and emotional needs according to standards of care.
- Assesses patient preferences and barriers to involvement in care, including values, emotional, spiritual, cultural and population‑specific needs.
- Maintains a constant state of alertness to work safely and effectively in a safety‑sensitive position.
- Education:
Nursing Diploma/Associate’s Degree in Nursing. - Experience:

Certifications:
Current RN license.
- Critical Care, Cardiac, or Acute Med/Surg Experience Preferred.
- Accepts ADN/BSN/MSN candidates.
