General Function

The Campus Safety Specialist performs safety, loss prevention, traffic control duties, conducts regular vehicular, bike, and foot patrols and responds to emergency and non‑emergency situations, renders assistance as appropriate, and makes reports. The Specialist enforces University parking and other regulations, directs traffic, and provides directions and information. The role is instrumental in campus safety through proactive efforts such as identifying hazards, conducting building visits, checking safety equipment, delivering safety and security lectures, and interacting positively with students, faculty, staff, and guests.

Primary

Duties
  • Maintains a safe and secure campus by traveling through assigned areas on bicycle, foot, or vehicle, observing for unauthorized personnel, enforcing regulations, reporting violations, checking doors and locks, and securing buildings.
  • Reduces potential injury, theft, or property loss by inspecting for hazards, evaluating emergency equipment, and reporting unsafe conditions.
  • Enforces parking and bicycle regulations, provides directions, issues tickets, applies wheel clamps, arranges for towing, and delivers incident reports.
  • Responds to environmental and security emergencies, assesses situations, takes mitigation actions, and assists with the incident command system.
  • Renders medical assistance, performs CPR, determines need for additional care, contacts emergency services, and documents incidents.
  • Promotes safety awareness through interaction, distribution of information, and scheduled training sessions.
  • Encourages proactive safety by consulting with campus leaders, developing reduction programs, monitoring progress, and adjusting strategies.
  • Supports campus image by providing directions, assistance, and basic service (e.g., cell phone use, battery jump) within capability.
  • Responds to crimes and sexual misconduct, provides victim assistance, documents incidents, and reports to appropriate authorities.
  • Accurately documents complaints, daily activities, and incidents, and submits reports.
  • Provides training and serves as dispatcher as directed, supporting the Office’s personnel.
  • Maintains professional competence through self‑study, attended courses, and directed training on Clery Act, Title IX, fire systems, hazardous materials, and incident command.
  • Contributes to office morale by adhering to policies and performing assigned duties professionally.
  • Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
    • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required;
      Associate’s degree one year of related experience required;
      Bachelor’s degree no experience required.
    • Experience: At least two years of customer service, safety, security, loss control, parking, traffic control, or emergency roles if a high school diploma holder.
    • Skills: Effective verbal and written communication, interview and reporting abilities, interpersonal skills, self‑direction, computer literacy, quick emergency response, and knowledge of safety procedures.
    • Certifications: Valid driver’s license; first aid, child, infant CPR, AED certification;
      Incident Command System 100 and NIMS 700 training within one year;
      Campus Safety orientation; MSU bicycle training.
    • Physical Requirements: Extended standing, quick movement on foot, bike, and stairs, lift up to 50 lbs, occasional confined space or height work, primarily outdoors in varied weather.
    • Additional Duties: Night, holiday, and weekend work; overtime may be required; essential employee status; work in sensitive facilities; possible export‑controlled duties.
