Building Maintenance Worker (Corrections) – Position Grade: 12G, Department:
City Justice Center, Job Type: Full‑Time (Permanent), Examination Number: EX1135,
Location:
Downtown – St. Louis, MO. Incumbents perform maintenance and repair to city buildings, equipment, and facilities.
- Maintain and repair stationary engines and mechanical equipment.
- Operate high‑pressure equipment, generators, air compressors, pumps, and other devices.
- Minor electrical repair including replacement of light fixtures, bulbs, ballast, fuses, circuit breakers, electric door locks, and other electronics.
- Minor plumbing repairs including replacement of toilets, sinks, showers, washers, water valves, sump pumps, unclog drains, and other plumbing work.
- Install finish goods including laying floor tile, carpet, painting, installations and finishing of wood, metal, and drywall.
- Replace or repair cable‑ready security cameras and recording equipment.
- Be available for on‑call duty including snow removal, evaluating emergency maintenance needs, and performing emergency repairs on an on‑call rotation.
- Repair and maintain plumbing, steam and water systems, windows, doors, locks, pumps, fans, and other city building facilities and equipment.
- Perform minor repairs to electrical fixtures, wiring, and equipment.
- Replace plumbing, electrical, and building components, fixtures, and equipment.
- May fabricate items from metal.
- Operate a wide variety of power and hand tools and equipment to complete tasks.
- May perform concrete pouring and finishing duties, repair asphalt pavement, erect and repair fences, erect signs, and install and repair park and recreation equipment.
- Data utilization: ability to perform basic data analysis, review, classify, prioritize, reference statutes and guidelines, and diagnose relationships.
- Human interaction: ability to explain, demonstrate, and clarify to others within established policies, procedures, and standards; follow specific instructions.
- Equipment, machinery, tools, and materials use: ability to operate, calibrate, tune, and perform rapid adjustments on equipment such as carpentry tools, plumbing tools, measuring tapes, circuit testers, ladders, hydraulic lifts, shop bench tools, concrete tools, welders, compressors, pumps, and related materials.
- Verbal aptitude: ability to utilize reference data and documents such as regulations, blueprints, maps, construction drawings, operation manuals, work orders, parts lists, and material safety data sheets.
- Mathematical aptitude: ability to perform basic arithmetic and calculations related to surface area, volume, weight, and basic geometry.
- Functional reasoning: ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; independent judgment and decision‑making.
- Situational reasoning: ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving pre‑defined duties that may frequently change.
- Environmental factors: tasks may expose the worker to adverse conditions such as dust, pollen, fumes, temperature extremes, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, and toxic agents.
- Physical requirements:
ability to lift, push, pull, stoop, crouch, bend, twist, climb, and balance for maintenance tasks. - Sensory requirements: ability to identify differences in color, texture, odor, sound, and shape to detect changes or hazardous materials and operate equipment correctly.
Associate’s degree in Building Maintenance, Building Systems Engineering Technology, or a related field with emphasis on electrical systems, carpentry or plumbing; or two years of experience in the building maintenance trade. Experience must demonstrate proficiency in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or locksmith. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
LicenseMust possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis.
