Job Description - HVAC Mechanic (240000W2)

Incumbents in this position install, maintain and repair heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Installs, maintains and repairs HVAC equipment including air conditioning units, furnaces, exhaust fans, boilers, chillers, and air handling equipment.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs refrigeration units and ice making equipment.
  • Assembles and connects piping and refrigeration lines; installs, adjusts and maintains controls; tests equipment; recharges refrigeration systems; examines systems for leaks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Data Utilization:
    Ability to perform basic level of data analysis, including review, classification, categorization, prioritization and referencing statutes and guidelines.
  • Discretion in determining and referencing established standards to recognize interactive effects and relationships.
  • Human Interaction:
    Ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well-established policies, procedures and standards; to follow instructions and respond to simple requests.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use:
    Ability to operate, calibrate, tune, synchronize and perform complex rapid adjustments on equipment, machinery, tools such as controls, electrical meters, gauges, vacuum pumps, hand and power tools, refrigerant recovery equipment and related materials.
  • Verbal Aptitude:
    Ability to utilize advisory data and information such as work orders, logs, schematics, blueprints, parts catalogs, manuals and material safety data sheets.
  • Mathematical Aptitude:
    Ability to perform basic arithmetic, calculate surface area, percentages, fractions and decimals, and basic algebra and geometry.
  • Functional Reasoning:
    Ability to apply principles of rational systems, interpret instructions, and exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards.
  • Situational Reasoning:
    Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations requiring evaluation against measurable criteria.
  • Environmental Factors:
    Awareness of potential exposure to adverse conditions such as wetness, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents or toxic agents.
  • Physical Requirements:

    Regular, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects ranging from 20 to over 100 pounds.
  • Sensory Requirements:
    Ability to recognize and identify characteristics of colors to identify color‑coded wires, shapes to distinguish objects, sounds and odors to detect malfunctioning equipment.
Qualifications

An associate's degree or completion of a two‑year training program in refrigeration, air conditioning and heating technology from a recognized trade school or junior college; plus one year of experience in diagnosis, installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating systems in commercial and institutional HVAC service and installation work.
OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Certification

Candidates must be certified in EPA Standards at the Universal level (Type I, II and III) for refrigeration handling.

License

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must provide a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request. Only qualified applicants who provide proof of a valid driver's license will be considered for this position.
