Summary
This position is located at the VA St. Louis Health Care System (VASTLHCS), a complex, level 1A facility. The position functions as an Electrician Leader within the Electric Shop, Maintenance and Operations, Facilities Engineering Service, accomplishing trades and labor work.
DutiesMajor duties include, but are not limited to:
Serves as work leader of multiple employees in accomplishing trades and labor work in support of the Facilities Management Division. Provides advice to workers on how to follow supervisory instructions and meet deadlines. Assists the supervisor with the preparation and ordering of materials to perform maintenance, repair and improvements to systems and structures throughout the medical center (ensuring that needed stock is obtained from supply locations for maintenance tasks).
Assists in training employees on the proper steps to complete work orders and any associated tasks. Installs, modifies, repairs, troubleshoots, and tests new and existing electric systems including underground primary (13,800 volts) and secondary (480/277/208/120 volts) single and polyphase distribution systems, diesel operated auxiliary power generating systems, and pneumatic tube systems. Fabricates and installs conduit, prepares conductors for installation, connects component parts or component circuits, tests circuits, and connects completed circuitry to power source for energization.
Inspects, locates, and diagnoses electrical trouble to perform maintenance service and repairs to electrical wiring systems, breaker panels, automatic and manual fire alarm and lighting systems, automatic lawn sprinkler systems, clocks, rheostats, thermostats, heating equipment, light fixtures, fans, motors, shop equipment, and other electrical equipment. Plans, lays out, and completes the installation, modification and repair of signal systems, systems, relays, new outlets, new lighting, automatic timers, new shop equipment, and remodels, restores, and/or overhauls existing electrical installations and equipment.
Maintains an inventory and accountability of electrical material, equipment and tools needed to perform assignments (new installations or maintenance) - notifying the Maintenance and Repair (M&R) foreman of any shortages or missing items. Completes clean up on equipment and related work area as necessary. Performs other related duties as assigned. Promotion Potential:

Working Conditions:
Work involves frequent standing, stooping, climbing, bending, and kneeling, and occasionally working in cramped awkward positions. Required to lift and handle objects weighing 45 pounds; often lifts and moves heavier objects with the assistance of other workers, lifting devices and aids such as movable tables or jacks. Work involves making repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and other hard to reach places.
May frequently lift and carry tools, equipment and parts that weigh up to 20 pounds and less often, up to 45 pounds. Occasionally, may lift or move, with assistance, moderately heavy objects weighing more than 45 pounds. Work is done inside and outside. It is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. May be required to make repairs and installations outside in adverse weather conditions.
Occasionally make repairs in areas where unpleasant odors are present. Subject to cuts, bruises, scrapes, sprains, and strains from handling tools and installing equipment. Subject to burns from hot components, solder, high voltage, and electrical shock. Required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate to the tasks being performed.
