General Function
- The Maintenance Technician II performs skilled work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of mechanical, electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing and structural systems; monitors the performance of heating, cooling, and related systems by interpreting the energy management system alarms and temperature and pressure differentials, troubleshoots problems, and makes adjustments, when necessary. This position also performs routine carpentry work using hand and power tools and precision measuring and testing devices to repair or remodel existing structures according to work orders or verbal instructions.
Description of Primary Duties
- The Maintenance General Mechanic performs skilled work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of mechanical, electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing and structural systems. The Maintenance General Mechanic monitors the performance of heating, cooling, and related systems by interpreting the energy management system alarms and temperature and pressure differentials, troubleshoots problems, and makes adjustments, when necessary.
The Maintenance General Mechanic also performs routine carpentry work using hand and power tools and precision measuring and testing devices to repair or remodel existing structures according to work orders or verbal instructions.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
- Education:
A high school diploma or the equivalent and completion of a maintenance vocational/technical school and more than one and up to two years (more than 30 but less than 60 credit hours) of college in specific and/or specialized courses or equivalent vocational training or certification is required. An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered for substitution of educational requirements.
Experience:
At least two years of successful experience in one of the mechanical trades is required.
Skills:
Requires general mechanical ability which includes skills in the use of electrical test equipment, and small hand and power tools, mechanical equipment and materials applicable to the mechanical trades. Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, and schematics is required. Computer literacy using Microsoft or a trade related software /program or related mobile device is required. Effort:
Must be able to lift and transport materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis; prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching on a daily basis; and working in confined spaces. Requires a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual and electrically-powered tools and electrical test equipment, to move throughout campus, including climbing stairs in all University buildings, and to work k is performed indoors and out-of-doors, occasionally in environments that are dusty, noisy, or which could have work hazards.
Some positions in this job classification (job title) are designated as essential employees who must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather; the supervisor will communicate whether the particular position is considered essential and under what situations. Will be required to respond to after-hours emergencies and mandatory overtime. License: A valid driver's license is required.

Scope of the position requires exposure to and use of chemicals, solvents, cleaners, and lubricants common to mechanical work that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed.
