The equipment technician performs entry‑level skilled work in the maintenance and repair of light vehicles and heavy construction equipment. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision. MoDOT will bring candidates onto the team as entry‑level, intermediate, or senior level, based on your skills and experience. This opening is a career‑ladder position with opportunities for advancement.
Responsibilities- Maintain and perform basic repairs to automobiles, trucks, tractors, loaders, motor graders, and other heavy equipment.
- Inspect, service, repair, and overhaul transmissions, engines, clutches, drive lines, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, ignition systems; repair and install hydraulic controls; tune motors using standard testing equipment; dismantle, repair, and reassemble air compressors, hydraulic jacks, pumps, cylinders, and related equipment.
- Inspect, repair, overhaul, and assemble automotive components such as alternators, distributors, and starters.
- Complete mandated fleet inspections and ensure all equipment meets OSHA standards and all repairs and modifications are done in accordance with operational specifications and safety standards.
- May weld and modify equipment and fabricate parts.
- Associate’s Degree in Diesel Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, Automotive Technology, OR
- Completion of a formal post‑secondary technical training program in automobile or heavy equipment‑related repair (at least 30 credit hours or one school year) AND one year of experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair, OR
- Two years of experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair.
- Passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver’s license (CDL) exam; must pass the driving portion of the Class B CDL exam with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, and interstate status (either Excepted Interstate [EI] or Non‑Excepted Interstate [NI]) within 60 days of hire.
- Valid vehicle inspection license within 60 days of hire.
- Successful completion of a work simulation examination and medical‑physical examination.
- Job requires significant physical stamina and endurance.
- Job exposes to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse environmental characteristics.
- Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
