Job Summary

This position serves as the Lead Person for the daily operations of the Umlaut business unit. The individual in this role will oversee and support the safe and efficient use of the rail yard by Umlaut team members, clients, visitors, and BNSF operating personnel. Key responsibilities include leading and coordinating yard activities to ensure proper railcar placement for optimal facility utilization.

This person will also take a hands‑on role in unloading and loading railcars across a variety of commodities and handling methods. As a working lead, this position sets the standard for safety, efficiency, and teamwork within the yard operations.

Duties / Responsibilities
  • Lead, train, and oversee Umlaut Transload Operator(s) to ensure safe, efficient, and productive operations
  • Oversee daily unloading of a variety of materials, ensuring proper handling and documentation
  • Operate and direct the use of railcar loading systems and related equipment
  • Safely operate railcar mover and direct car positioning activities as needed
  • Manage and track all railcar movements in the yard, including inbound/outbound switching, ordering, and releasing
  • Ensure all team members are cross‑trained across operational functions to maintain flexibility and efficiency
  • Enforce all safety policies and procedures among team members, customers, and visitors
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with the local BNSF switching crew to coordinate switching activities
  • Perform and direct general maintenance on equipment as needed
  • Schedule and coordinate regular maintenance and repairs on all rail yard‑related equipment
  • Assist with and delegate general facility duties such as landscaping, equipment cleaning, and facility upkeep
Skills / Abilities
  • Comfortable working with computer technology
  • Ability to learn and become proficient with various operations software
  • Good personal communication skills, detail oriented, and self‑motivated
  • Comfortable working with a diverse range of individuals
  • Knowledge of railroad safety rules, operating procedures, and industry best practices.
  • Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making skills in a fast‑paced operational environment.
  • Ability to identify operational efficiencies and implement process improvements.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills for equipment and facility maintenance.
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment, including loaders, forklifts, conveyors, and railcar movers.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maintain a high level of accountability.
  • Ability to safely work outdoors in varying weather conditions and around active rail operations.
Education and Experience
  • Required:

    High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Required:

    Railroad training (may be obtained after hire)
  • Required:

    Capable to learn how to operate and maintain rail car/transloading equipment (e.g., hoses, portable conveyors, transfer pumps, portable stair systems, small to medium‑sized equipment, etc.)
  • Required:

    Demonstrated commitment to safety, operational excellence, and customer service
  • Preferred: 3 years of experience in transloading, rail operations, warehousing, logistics, or a related industrial environment
  • Preferred:
    Experience supervising employees, coordinating work activities, or leading a team
Physical and/or Travel Requirements
  • Must be able to periodically push and pull up to 50 pounds at a time
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds at a time
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to work in varied outdoor climates
