Second Harvest Food Bank is looking for an experienced, detail-oriented Accountant to join our team and serve as the organization’s primary accounting professional.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Accountant is responsible for the accurate and timely operation of Second Harvest’s accounting and financial functions. This role owns the monthly close process, financial reporting, reconciliations, fund and grant accounting, government program billing, payroll-related financial responsibilities, audit preparation, and internal financial controls.

This is a hands‑on accounting position for someone who is comfortable owning the day‑to‑day accounting function while also helping organizational leadership understand the story behind the numbers. The Accountant works closely with the Executive Director, Office Manager, department leaders, auditors, and other external financial partners.

What You’ll do
  • Own the monthly accounting close process and ensure financial records are complete, accurate, reconciled, and completed within established deadlines.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, budget‑to‑actual reports, variance analysis, and supporting schedules for leadership, the Finance Committee, and Board of Trustees.
  • Perform and review general ledger reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and other accounting activity.
  • Manage fund and grant accounting, including restricted funding, grant balances, allowable expenditures, and required financial reporting.
  • Prepare and submit government program billings and reimbursement requests with appropriate supporting documentation and reconciliations.
  • Process payroll and related financial responsibilities, including retirement and HSA contributions, payroll reconciliations, and required reporting.
  • Oversee cash management and banking activity, including deposits, transfers, disbursements, and bank reconciliations.
  • Provide accounting oversight for accounts payable and accounts receivable processes completed by other staff.
  • Lead day‑to‑day preparation for the annual independent financial audit and support other financial and government program audits.
  • Coordinate financial information and schedules needed for Form 990, Form 5500, and other required financial or regulatory filings.
  • Partner with the Executive Director on the annual operating budget, financial forecasts, cash‑flow projections, and financial analysis.
  • Develop and maintain strong accounting procedures, documentation, workflows, and internal controls.
  • Serve as a financial resource to department leaders and help staff understand budgets and financial information.
What We’re Looking For
  • Three or more years of progressively responsible accounting or bookkeeping experience preferred, with demonstrated ability to independently manage core accounting functions.
  • Experience with month‑end close, financial statement preparation, general ledger reconciliations, and journal entries.
  • Strong Excel skills and proficiency with accounting and financial systems;
    Quick Books experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP and the ability to research and apply accounting guidance.
  • Nonprofit, fund or grant accounting, government reimbursement, payroll, budgeting, or audit experience is strongly valued but not required in every area.
  • Education or training in accounting, finance, business, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered. CPA or other accounting credential is a plus, but not required.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, judgment, and ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
  • Ability to explain financial information clearly to individuals with varying levels of accounting knowledge.
  • Ability to work independently, identify problems, develop practical solutions, and take ownership of assigned responsibilities.
  • High level of integrity, sound judgment, and discretion when working with confidential financial information.
