The Security Officer functions as a supporting member of the Surgical Hospital team by performing various tasks which include observe and report activities and incidents at Ohio Valley Surgical Hospital, providing for the safety of our patients and personnel; while making periodic rounds to check for irregularities and to inspect buildings and equipment for any issues and a variety of other duties.
After primary duty of interior and exterior patrolling of parking lots and exterior buildings, security officers, when feasible, will also assist with the hospital lobby rounding, and to promote an overall culture of customer service excellence and a positive and professional first impression to our patients and visitors. The Security Officer reports directly to the Security Manager.
- Controlling access to facilities through the admittance process; assisting visitors with legitimate need to gain entry to the facility; screening visitors and client employees in an efficient manner in order to expedite their admittance to the site or facility
- Providing an atmosphere in which all employees and visitors know that the client responds to and cares about their needs; providing a courteous, respectful and pleasant interaction with each employee and visitor of Ohio Valley Surgical Hospital.
- Communicating in a manner that is open, honest and responsive in all situations; to the extent authorized, provides information regarding the site and surrounding area as requested by visitors
- Monitoring entrances and exits; acting to prevent unapproved or unlawful entry; loss prevention, controlling entrances, the movement of people and vehicles, parking and lot gate.
- Monitoring all areas and entrances remotely using computer table.
- Professionally directs persons who cause a disturbance to leave the property.
- Patrolling assigned site on foot or in vehicle; checking for unsafe conditions, hazards, unlocked doors, violations, blocked entrances, mechanical problems, and unauthorized persons;
- Inspecting buildings and grounds for litter and assisting in keeping the property well maintained.
- Protecting evidence or scene of incident in the event of accidents, emergencies, or investigations; setting up barriers and signage, and providing direction or information to others.
- Preparing logs or reports as required and typing reports and/or entering information in a computer using standard grammar; inspecting control logs and taking action as required.
- Observing and reporting incidents or suspicious activity to Security Manager, company management, life/safety personnel or public safety authorities as appropriate for the circumstances.
- Responding to incidents of fire, medical emergency, bomb threat, flooding, water discharge, elevator emergency, hazardous materials, inclement weather, and other incidents or conditions following procedures established for the site, by the company.
- Greet patients , families and visitors entering the hospital.
- Thank patients, families and visitors as they leave the hospital.

- Coordinate wheelchair transport with Pre-Op, PACU, etc. if physical limitations exist.
- Coordinate walk-over if deemed necessary.
- Monitor and respond to guest needs. Reduce anxiety and fear using communication and compassion.
- Know how to communicate with all key hospital departments and personnel.
- “Work the lobby” by speaking with families, offering assistance or coffee, etc.
- Alert/interface with Housekeeping re: any spills, hazards, or shortages of supplies in restroom.
- Provide information re: local amenities for visitors including local hotels, restaurants, flower shops, bus schedules, pharmacies, etc.
- Assists in maintaining the cleanliness of the main lobby and its surrounding area.
- Coordinate lost and found.
- Utilize good judgment to respond in a calm and efficient manner in all situations.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 18 years of age.
- Have a reliable means of communication (i.e., pager or phone) and transportation (public or private).
- Knowledge of or ability to learn security operations and procedures.
- Be an effective team member and have courteous telephone manners.
- Ability to maintain professional composure when dealing with unusual circumstances.
- Ability to adapt to changes in the external environment and organization.
- Ability to write routine correspondence, including logs and reports.
