Position Purpose

To provide evaluation, assessment, consultation, and/or direct instruction for students (birth–age 21) eligible for Regional Low Incidence Disabilities Program services for students who are Vision Impaired (VI) as well as their families, teachers, and other support staff.

Primary Duties and Accountabilities
  • Participate as a member of IFSP/IEP team, conducting initial evaluations and three-year reevaluations of eligible students.
    • Interpret medical vision reports as applicable to the educational environment.
  • Conduct functional vision and learning media assessments.
  • Develop and implement IFSPs/IEPs assigned students, including measurable and realistic instructional goals.
  • Plan and present coherent instruction which is adapted to the learning abilities of each student.
  • Frequently assess student performance and maintain accurate records.
  • Provide consultation and training to staff related to the implementation of student's programs, including data collection.
  • Assist staff in the assessment of students to determine specific instructional strategies and techniques.
  • Assist in the development and acquisition program materials or resources for students, parents, and teachers; including coordination with Brailist to ensure necessary brailed materials.
  • Communicate regularly with students, families, and other appropriate team members regarding student performance.
  • Prepare and assist in the transition of students to their next educational placement.
  • Assist in coordinating programs and services with external agencies as needed.
  • Determine the skills and abilities of assigned support personnel, provide training, and delegate duties to provide the most effective learning opportunities for students.
  • Follow school or classroom management procedures and implement individual behavior programs as specified in the student's IFSP/IEP.
  • Provide training and to parents and staff where appropriate on support needs and strategies for students.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential assessment and program records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Attend Special Education and other staff meetings as requested.
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
  • Qualifications
  • Qualify for an Oregon Teaching License. An Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission with vision impaired endorsement or ability to obtain one is required.
  • Orientation and Mobility certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with students who are Visually Impaired (VI).
  • Experience in developing curriculum and instructional supports for students who are Visually Impaired (VI), including orientation and mobility techniques.
  • Ability to relate and communicate effectively with students, families, and educational staff.
  • Valid Oregon Driver license.
  • The ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the essential job functions.
  • Physical Demands

    The teacher is normally standing, walking or sitting as required. The teacher may have to lift, bend, support and/or restrain a student whose age or handicapping condition or behavior requires adult assistance. The teacher frequently lifts materials/supplies and equipment up to 20 lbs.

    Working Conditions

    This is an itinerant position requiring travel between multiple work sites. Generally, the teacher works in an indoor work environment performing clean, non-hazardous work. However, some activities may occur in community settings. In addition, the teacher may occasionally be exposed to bodily fluids due to student injury, illness or behavior.

  • Perform program responsibilities in accordance with statutes, administrative rules, policies, and collective bargaining agreements.
