General

Summary:

Prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals for use in both diagnostic studies and therapeutic treatments. Creates and enhances diagnostic images using a variety of imaging equipment and tools. Collects biologic specimens and prepares data for interpretation by physicians. Follows radiation safety guidelines and documents radiopharmaceutical usage for regulatory compliance. May require a bachelor’s degree in a related area.

• The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is expected to practice safe procedures and adhere to radiation safety measures under the supervision of the RSO and/or the Radiologist. Specific duties may include but are not limited to the following:
• Complete patient education regarding the exam
• Promote comfort for the patient
• Perform PET/CT exams as ordered by authorized user
• Produce high quality images for the radiologist to evaluate
• Complete appropriate documentation
• Perform quality control functions related to PET/CT
• Assist in compilation and maintenance of statistical data
• Follow infection control and safety guidelines

• Experience with PET/CT. Requires a certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the nuclear medicine technology certification board (NMTCB) and a state license to practice.
• Explain medical procedures to patients and answer any questions they may have
• Follow safety procedures to protect the patients and themselves from unnecessary radiation exposure
• Prepare and administer radioactive drugs to patients.
• Monitor and watch for any unusual reactions patients may have to drugs
• Operate imaging equipment.
• Maintain detailed procedure records.

• A Nuclear Medicine Technologist position requires a minimum of an associate degree in nuclear medicine, prefer individuals with a bachelor's degree.
• Some candidates may become qualified for the position by combining a 12 month certification program in nuclear medicine technology with an associate or bachelor  degree program in a health field such as nursing or radiologic technology.
