Peace Health is seeking a Lab Assistant – Specimen Management for a full‑time, 1.00 FTE night position. The salary range for this job opening is $20.56 – $32.09 per hour. The hiring rate is dependent on education, training, work experience, collective‑bargaining agreement terms, seniority, and other factors. This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement, and there may be more than one opening on this posting.

Job Summary

Works collaboratively with all healthcare team members toward optimal patient and organizational outcomes. Performs phlebotomy services, specimen collection and handling, utilizes laboratory information systems (LIS), and supports patients with information and direction using laboratory services. Assists lab staff in delivering patient care, distributing lab results and reports, and operating laboratory equipment.

Essential Functions
  • Prepare, deliver, and pick up items in accordance with health and safety regulations and laboratory policies to ensure specimen integrity, quality patient care, and caregiver safety.
  • Collect and label specimens for requested testing, process specimens according to established guidelines, and complete documentation.
  • Perform data entry of patient demographics and tests ordered. Complete all required paperwork, technical and non‑technical procedures to process and submit specimens.
  • Receive, handle, sort, process, or package specimens.
  • Receive and make telephone calls, and use computer terminals and reference guides to provide information and answer patient and client questions regarding specimen requirements, test results, and other requests.
  • Perform waived testing as assigned. Recognize abnormal results and follow up according to standard operating procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma preferred or equivalent.
  • Prior clinical laboratory experience preferred.
Skills
  • Able to approach, communicate, and positively interact with patients and health‑care professionals while performing duties, frequently under stressful conditions. (Required)
  • Able to work without supervision but knows when to consult with supervisory personnel for assistance. (Required)
  • Able to use the electronic laboratory information system and perform work activities in accordance with established policies and procedures. (Required)
  • Able to recognize various levels of service (routine to critical) demanded of the laboratory and prioritize work accordingly. (Required)
  • Able to prioritize effectively and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. (Required)
Department / Location Specific Notes
  • Receives, processes, and distributes specimens to technical departments. Prepares specimens and forms for testing at the laboratory and for transport to external reference laboratories.
Working Conditions
  • Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without assistive equipment.
  • Ability to move around the area with occasional sitting.
  • Fine motor skills to grasp and control medical equipment.
  • Frequent reaching and grasping.
  • Occasional bending and stooping.
  • Push/Pull:
    Frequently up to 25 lbs. force; occasionally up to 50 lbs. force.
  • Exposure to biohazard, body fluids, and airborne particles.
  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Time spent on site in a medical/hospital setting.
  • Vision and hearing within normal limits.
  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
