POSITION: Medical Coder II Specialist;
Certified Coder

DEPARTMENT: Pathology

REPORTS TO: Medical Records Manager

WORK SETTING: In-office training with the possibility of working remote/hybrid.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

This position is responsible for evaluating medical records to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with the International Classification of Diseases Manual and the American Pathology Foundation. Work Location: After successful training on site for 6 months;
Hybrid remote in Springfield, OR 97477

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Evaluates pathology reports and applies billing codes for ICD-10 and CPT charges according to CMS and department guidelines to ensure efficient and accurate billing.

Auditing of medical records in pathology department including understanding and editing of pathology reports, including bone marrow, molecular, fine needle aspiration, autopsy, and various consultation reports.

Ability to enter and format data into pathology medical records including pathology reports and ancillary testing data.

Must have excellent written communication skills to relay problems to management and to advise on new or updated procedures to prevent future medical records issues.

Advanced knowledge of medical records laws and regulations.

Makes recommendations for changes in policies and procedures to maintain standards for correct coding, minimize the risk or fraud and abuse, and optimize revenue recovery.

Responsible for being familiar and compliant with all health record regulatory standards, laws and requirements including HIPAA regulations. As part of the institution’s ongoing quality improvement effort, the employee should pursue opportunities to resolve identified problems and improve patient care.

Actively participates in the team and shared ownership of work group. A shared ownership actively focuses their skills, knowledge, and abilities on the team’s performance. Members hold one another jointly responsible for the team’s results.

Responsible for being familiar with safety policies and procedures in the work area. As part of PC’s efforts to ensure a safe workplace, employees are asked to actively participate in hazard identification and resolution. Attendance at safety training sessions is essential; the employee holds the responsibility for ensuring that they attend the sessions accordingly.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Takes telephone messages and directs calls.

Keeps accurate records of referral cases.

Preparation of slides and reports for pathologist’s conferences such as concordance and tumor as well as for physicians.

Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/EDUCATION:

A Coder II would need advanced knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding systems, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and Medicare reimbursement guidelines. A two-year Health Information Management degree or equivalent of experience, education, and training is required. Certified coding professional is required.

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING/SKILLS:

Typing speed of 60 wpm required. Excellent computer word processing skills required. Knowledge of Outlook, Adobe and Healthcare Electronic Medical Record software and interface resulting. Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology. Ability to file by alphabetic and numerical systems.
