Position Summary
The Custodian IV position serves as the head custodian in an area predicated on the complexity and or size of the building or facility assigned to. This position is responsible for keeping assigned building(s) / site, clean, safe, functional, and secure in accordance with prescribed codes and established district policies and standards. A custodial worker must maintain all assigned building(s) in a state of operational excellence such that they present no interruptions, distractions, or obstacles to the educational and community program(s).
This position works 6 : 00 a.m.
- 2 : 30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
This position is distinguished form the Custodial III position by the emphasis on work predicated on the complexity and or size of the physical plant of the assigned building or facility. The Custodian IV position is further delineated from the Custodial III position by the work direction provided to custodial staff in either the Custodial I or II position.
Essential FunctionsEssential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
- Completes appropriate log(s), forms and paperwork as required.
- Reports safety, sanitary, and fire hazards immediately to supervisor(s).
- Reports issues to authorities as necessary, animal control, suspicious activity, etc.
- Assists other custodial / maintenance personnel, as necessary.
- Supervises, reviews work, and provides feedback to other building custodians as directed.
- Develops weekly work schedule(s) for other custodians and determines school-break schedules.
- Ensures supply orders and inventory systems are accurate.
- Adjusts work schedules to meet custodial needs before and after school and for outside group activities.
- Writes work and supply orders and interacts with vendors.
- Maintains and cleans HVAC systems and modifies systems utilizing technology support systems.
- Maintains the inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment.
- Implements and monitors fire prevention and safety programs utilizing technology support systems.
- Performs various building and grounds inspections and makes recommendations.
- Directs and performs basic grounds keeping activities including, but not limited to leaf collection, spreading top dressing (mulch, chips, shavings, etc.), snow and ice removal / abatement, walkway clearing, and drainage maintenance.
- Performs routine maintenance and makes minor repairs of custodial equipment.
- Unlock / lock doors, windows, and gates.
- Turns on / off lights and secures buildings for start / end of day.
- Cleans, sanitizes areas (i.e. classrooms, halls, offices, restrooms, cafeteria, etc.), vacuums, shampoos, sweeps, scrubs, waxes, polishes, and mops / buffs all types of floor surfaces.
- Operates and maintains sweepers and other power equipment used in custodial work (buffer, carpet steamer, varnisher, vacuum(s), auto scrubber, and power washer) to ensure they work effectively and safely.
- Keeps walkways, parking areas and entrances clean and clear of debris.
- Sets up, takes down and moves tables, chairs, equipment, shelving and partitions for meetings, athletic events and other District functions as assigned, including weekend events.
- Washes windows, white boards, chalk boards and walls.
- Cleans and polishes furniture, windows, metal work and computer screens.
- Maintains indoor and outdoor lighting.
- Collects and empties all recycling and waste containers in a safe and sanitary manner.
- Washes, scrubs, and disinfects restrooms as well as cleans doors, door handles, sinks, fixtures, panels, and drinking fountains daily.
- Performs a variety of basic maintenance duties including, but not limited to, unplugging sink drains, door maintenance, and painting.
- Cleans up spills (including bodily fluids) in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Responds to special requests for custodial services from staff members.
- Other related duties may be assigned.
- High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) OR
- Four (4) years of equivalent experience in the custodial field.
- Ability to obtain a valid First Aid / CPR card.
- Ability to obtain and hold an Oregon Driver license.
- Ability to pass Safe Schools modules and custodial trainings as assigned.
- Related experience in an educational setting. Previous experience in sanitation or custodial work. Previous hazardous communication and asbestos training. Previous experience directing the custodial work of others.
