Job Description

Position: Loader Operator / Vat Loader

Location: Springfield Plywood and Veneer

Reports to: Green End Supervisor

Department: SPW Log Processing

Wage: Level 4 $ 23.77

Shift: Swing

Position Purpose

Employees work as part of a two‑person team focused on keeping machine centers operating by prioritizing and communicating with the other operator. This role ensures smooth operation of the lathe infeed, bucksaw bins, steam vats, and peeler core bunks.

Essential Functions (ADA Essential)

The employee operates a front‑end loader by manipulating levers and joysticks to control the clamping, lifting, and releasing of loader clamps using hands and feet.

Move 8′‑long logs ranging from 6″ to 60″ in diameter.

Keep bucksaw bunks emptied by lifting and removing blocks and placing them in the appropriate location.

Determine with the supervisor whether blocks are loaded into steam vats or stacked on the ground.

Load steam vats by driving the machine into the vat tunnel and manipulating levers to release blocks; push blocks into the back wall to stack them.

Once vats are fully loaded, close vat doors and turn on hot water.

Unload vats for peeling by driving the loader into the vat, opening clamps, filling them with blocks, and moving the blocks to the lathe infeed.

Monitor the peeler core bunk, empty it as needed, and transfer cores to the core trailer area.

Maintain front‑end loader fluids at proper levels; perform daily inspections and submit logs to supervisor.

Count cores on trailers and place chip cores as required.

Non‑Essential Functions

Rotate to different positions for cross‑training or production purposes.

Assist coworkers or maintenance personnel with basic maintenance and upkeep of machine.

Working Environment

Inside 2% of time, Outside 98%; average temperature 60°F (extreme low 10°F, extreme high 105°F). Noise or vibration from machine operation may be present. Atmosphere includes dust (limited), mist (water), odors (dry wood), gases (none). Poor ventilation: none.

Physical Demands

Continuous use of hearing and vision. Frequent pushing/pulling and reaching. Occasional lifting or carrying more than 50 lbs. See attached job/task evaluation for full details.

Skills & Abilities

Excellent hand‑eye coordination.
Continuous use of vision/hearing.
Reading and speech required for safety training, lockout procedures, and hazard analysis.
Ability to work independently with little supervision.
Self‑directed, prioritize, organize, and make decisions efficiently.
