OverviewPosition Title: Press Operator
Reports To: Spreader Supervisor
Department: Spreaders
Hours per shift: 10-hour shifts, with three 10-minute breaks, and 30-minute unpaid lunch.
Shifts: Day 4:45 A.M. to 3:30 P.M.;
Swing 3:15 P.M. to 2:00 A.M.
Pressing veneer into plywood using hot press controls, loading and unloading. Maintain the time, temperature, and pressure of the hot press by following the press schedule. Keep a safe and clean work environment by removing obstructing debris. Communicate with the Line Tender to ensure quality standards are met.
Responsibilities- Guide loads of unpressed veneer into the press area through manipulation of controls.
- Load multiple layers of veneer onto each press opening; use the elevator to move veneer as needed.
- Index the elevator through openings until all veneer is loaded into the press.
- Complete loading within the required time to prevent glue from drying in the press.
- Set and monitor temperature (270°F to 360°F), time, and pressure based on panel thickness and veneer species.
- Operate a computer-based inventory system and print tickets to attach to pressed wood.

May rotate to other positions for cross-training; assist co-workers or maintenance personnel as needed.
Inside environment with an average temperature around 70°F; external conditions may include extreme cold (0°F) and extreme heat (115°F). Noise or vibration from machine operation and nearby forklifts. Refer to Job Hazard Analysis for hazards. Fumes: wood;

Odors: wood particles;
Ventilation: adequate.

Constant use of hearing and vision; frequent bending, twisting, pushing/pulling and reaching; occasional lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling more than 50 lbs. See attached Job/Task Evaluation.
Safety and Procedures- Follow lockout/tagout procedures; use PPE; communicate with co-workers; read and write safety materials as required.
