Green Veneer Supervisor

Position

Purpose:

Oversee log processing, green veneer operations in processing green veneer from the peeling through drying.

Position Functions:

  • Coordinate vat schedules and peel schedules with log yard supervisor.
  • Work with log yard supervisor and mill management with recovery test.
  • Ensure smooth operation of LPC, lathe and green composers.
  • Responsible for assuring proper dry veneer moisture content and accurate dry veneer grades to maximize volume and grade recovery.
  • Manage and organize green and dry veneer inventory.
  • Maintains set standard for orderliness and organization of department.
  • Utilize the principles of performance improvement to identify issues and/or opportunities that if modified or corrected will improve results.
  • Work with QC to troubleshoot quality manufacturing issues for green and dry veneer and educate leads and employees.
  • Training & Mentoring – Sponsor future leaders, be a sponsor of a safety committee sub-team.
  • Be involved with a Pillar team or involved with the pillar process. Be a coach and mentor to all positions supervised; give direction on areas of growth and needed training. Coordinate with Plant Superintendent to conduct in-house and external training. (Example: Incident reporting and training.) Provide honest and timely feedback to green end and dry end team through routine informal contact and conduct a daily meeting to provide team direction and instruction.
  • Take the lead in safety. Ensure that all workers under his/her supervision are given adequate safety training, coaching and proper tools to safely do the job. Promote safety awareness. Ensure proper use of lockout/tagout/retry and PPE. Encourage good housekeeping. Respond to employee and safety committee safety concerns in a timely manner.

    Coordinate major repair and maintenance schedules with maintenance and electrical staff. List for maintenance and team members for maintenance days.
  • Be familiar with all equipment and its operation (including machine capabilities, product quality and standard production rates).
  • Policies & Procedures – Support and promote company policies and procedures while encouraging positive behavior in each member of the green end and dryer team. Be a leader in safety, Coordinates the completion of administrative paperwork and reporting related to production reports, scheduling, personnel actions, timekeeping and safety.

Working Environment: (1) Environment exposure
- Inside 80% of the time; average temperature 65 degrees, high 100 degrees, and low 40 degrees. Outside 20% of the time: average temperature 65 degrees, high 100 degrees, and low 30 degrees. (2) Noise or Vibration
- Dryer and other machine noises, forklift noise and similar heavy equipment found in the mill, but not adjacent to this workstation. Atmospheric conditions
- Fumes: none, Dust: present, Mist: water, Odors: green veneer, Gasses: none, Poor ventilation: none.

Skills:

(1) A bachelor's degree or 3 years of supervisory experience in plywood manufacturing. (2) Visually identify defects and grades associated with WIP. (3) Computer skills- experience with Excel, Word, and presentation software (PowerPoint) (4) Excellent communication skills; both written and verbal with all levels of the company from hourly, supervisors, vendors, and management. The communication needs to be direct without being confrontational and needs to accurately assess areas in need of improvement without exaggerating the gravity of the issue.

(5) Analytical skills- experience utilizing Quality Systems, statistical sampling, and utilizing data to see trends. (6) Training skills
- Ability to train, educate foreman, supervisors, leads and employees. Present training and educating via job guides, SOP's, and/or PowerPoint presentations. (7) Tools- proficient with micrometer and tape measure. (8) Ability to work with little supervision. Must be self-directed in identifying and efficiently completing each task.

Safety Features: (1) Use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, approved footwear) (2) Knowledge and understanding of company safety policies. This includes safety policies for visitors and contractors. (3) Knowledge and understanding of company Lockout procedures. (4) Ability to recognize unsafe behaviors in employees and supervisors.
