Job DescriptionGeneral statement of duties:
Performs skilled and semi-skilled duties related to the maintenance, preservation, and repair of asphalt surfaces throughout district facilities. Primary responsibilities include surface preparation, crack sealing, and application of sealcoat to parking lots, pathways, and other paved areas. Work also includes general park and facility maintenance and support duties as assigned and in the off season.
Distinguishing features of the class:
An employee in this classification performs more specialized and technical maintenance work, with a primary focus on asphalt preservation and seal coating operations. Work is performed under the supervision of the Maintenance and Construction Supervisor, with day-to-day assignments and project direction provided by the Structures Assistant, who serves as the project lead for the asphalt maintenance program. The position requires independent judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to operate specialized equipment.
This classification may provide guidance to lower-level staff but does not typically include formal supervisory responsibilities.
- Perform asphalt surface maintenance including cleaning, preparation, crack sealing, and application of sealcoat products to parking lots, trails, and other paved surfaces.
- Operate equipment used in asphalt maintenance including spray systems, sealcoat tanks, blowers, brooms, weed trimmers, and squeegees.
- Thoroughly clean surfaces using blowers, brooms, and other tools to remove debris, vegetation, and contaminants prior to application.
- Fill cracks using appropriate hot or cold-applied materials and treat oil spots with primers to ensure proper adhesion.
- Apply sealcoat using spray or manual application methods, ensuring a uniform and professional finish.
- Assist with layout and application of pavement striping, including ADA-compliant parking spaces and markings.
- Set up traffic control measures including cones, barricades, and signage to ensure safe work zones and proper curing times.
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs on equipment used in asphalt and general maintenance operations.
- Assist with general park maintenance tasks including debris removal, facility upkeep, minor carpentry, and painting as needed.
- Monitor work sites and report hazards, vandalism, or maintenance needs to appropriate personnel.
- Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor when interacting with staff and the public.
- Perform other job-related duties or tasks as required.
Desirable qualifications:
Knowledge:
Methods, materials, and equipment used in asphalt maintenance, seal coating, and surface preparation. Safety practices and procedures related to equipment operation and outdoor maintenance work.
Skills:
Operation and maintenance of seal coating equipment, spray systems, and hand and power tools. Ability to perform detailed work requiring precision and consistency in application techniques.
Abilities:
Work independently and as part of a crew in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions. Follow oral and written instructions and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public. Maintain attention to detail to ensure high-quality finished work. Utilize basic computer systems for timekeeping, purchasing, and work tracking.
Physical demands of the position:
This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting. Primarily outdoor work in all weather conditions, including high temperatures during peak seal coating season. Exposure to noise, chemicals, and equipment requiring use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
