Job DescriptionGeneral Statement of Duties:
Performs routine mowing schedules and operation of all mowing equipment. Coordinate mowing routines performed by staff assigned to mowing operations. Perform cleaning and maintenance of park grounds and facilities. Perform other job-related duties or tasks as required.
Distinguishing Features of the Class:
An employee in this classification performs routine operation of mowing equipment. Work includes planning of routine mowing schedules, communication of operations with supervisor and Park Services staff, and coordination with other assigned staff. During non-mowing season, assists staff with implementing routine park maintenance tasks. Work is supervised by the department supervisor. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of positions in this classification but may provide lead work over a Park Aide III, seasonal staff, and volunteers.
Examples Of Duties Performed: (Illustrative only. Any single position of a class will not necessarily involve all of the duties listed, and many positions will involve duties that are not listed.)
- Perform mowing including rough mowing, and conduct basic maintenance of all equipment used in mowing operations.
- Collaborate with staff and supervisor to plan routine mowing schedules. Provide guidance to assigned seasonal staff who share mowing operation responsibilities.
- Perform general support services to Park Services staff in maintaining parks and open space areas.
- Assist with repairs and replacement of irrigation system distribution lines and sprinkler heads.
- Assist Irrigation Specialist with installation, maintenance and repair projects, including low voltage wiring and control systems.
- Collaborate and conduct seasonal irrigation system inspections, as directed.
- Remove debris from park turf as required prior to mowing. Responsible for clearing clippings from park sidewalks and drives after concluding mowing operations.
- Monitor conditions of turf in parks and reports conditions that would suggest failure of irrigation system or poor turf conditions. Communicate observations of improper site conditions to supervisor.
- Conduct all activities in a safe manner and promptly reports to supervisor conditions that pose a safety risk to staff or patrons.
- Other job related duties as assigned.
Knowledge:
Safe operation of mowing equipment used in performing operations; ability to perform weekly routine maintenance of equipment used. General knowledge of park maintenance operations and irrigation systems. Foundational understanding of turf management best-practices; specifically, fertilization, aeration, and over-seeding.
Skills:
The operation and maintenance of mowing equipment and small gas-powered tools. Ability to tow smaller mowers on trailers. Operation of compact trenching, excavating, and loading equipment.
Abilities:
Understand and follow oral and written instructions; work in adverse weather conditions; deal courteously with the public; communicate and cooperate with peers and public.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to bend, twist, kneel, reach, and stoop, often in conjunction with reaching for or manipulating objects. The position requires the employee carry and use a leaf blower for extended periods of time. The position requires mobility including the ability to move materials such as bags, small equipment, leaf blower, and other equipment and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds often, up to 50 pounds occasionally, and seldom up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Manual dexterity and coordination, including but not limited to grasping and squeezing, are frequently required for the entirety of the work period. The duties of the position involve operating various types of mowers or standing for the vast majority of the work period. The duties of this position are most always performed outside, which means exposure to heat in summer and cold in winter is likely.

Personal Protective Equipment:
Hard hat, landscaping gloves, ear protection (ear plugs or muffs), particle mask, safety glasses, chaps, work boots, and long pants following the department's Uniform Policy.
Minimum Experience and Training:
High school graduation or equivalency and two years of experience in specialized grounds keeping or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the above-described duties.
