Job Summary
In coordination with peer Assistant Store Manager, assists the Store Manager in planning, coordinating and managing the store operations to control costs, meet targeted labor, maintain projected profit margins, meet or exceed sales goals and provide a pleasant and safe shopping experience for customers and a safe professional working environment for employees. Monitors and maintains stock to continually meet customers’ purchasing needs.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Manages the Grocery department, ensuring compliance with company policies, state and federal laws, and the store’s collective bargaining agreement.
- Monitors the hour-to-hour store appearance and conditions to ensure high standards of cleanliness, efficiency and productivity. Demonstrates understanding of store priorities and the ability to anticipate changes.
- Maintains a safe environment for customers and employees, thereby controlling general liability and workers’ compensation costs.
- Maintains a positive attitude toward coworkers and customers. Demonstrates personal integrity, appearance and ethical business practices that set a standard for all store personnel. Leads by example.
- Monitors employee effectiveness and productivity and ensures efficient labor utilization in the grocery department.
- Evaluates and implements store merchandising plans.
- Performs store personnel functions as necessary (e.g., hiring, training, disciplinary decisions, firing).
- Performs delegated Store Manager responsibilities in the absence of the Store Manager or as assigned.
- Assists the Store Manager in achieving or exceeding projected labor and productivity goals.
- Monitors and maintains the quality condition of all products. Ensures products are stocked, rotated and faced and that outdated or spoiled products are discarded appropriately.
- Performs other duties as assigned or needed.
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience:
- Currently enrolled in the Manager Apprentice Program and/or a minimum of one (1) year as Store Manager/Director or three (3) years as Assistant Store Manager/Director, or equivalent management experience in a retail grocery store.
- Clear written and verbal communication, leadership, interpersonal skills and composure with customers and co-workers.
- Supervisory skills (e.g., interviewing, scheduling, hiring, counseling, training, disciplining).
- Proficiency with Windows applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) in a work setting.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail to monitor progress and complete assignments efficiently and accurately.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to establish and maintain rapport with coworkers, supervisors and buyers.
- Ability to conduct visual inspections and read reports and computer data.
- Ability to accept direction from multiple sources and manage time to meet deadlines.
- Demonstrates initiative and self-direction to perform multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
- Strong understanding of company policies and the ability to respond to customer and employee needs professionally and appropriately.
- Age:
In Montana and Oregon, minimum age is 18; in all other states, minimum age is 21.
Ability to:
- Occasionally lift and maneuver objects up to 50 pounds.
- Operate check stand equipment (scales, scanners, cash registers).
- Use computer programs for tasks such as employee scheduling and product ordering.
- Stand, walk and move for long periods; bend, stoop and twist frequently.
- Perform basic math and compute weights, measures and profit margins.
- Work scheduled shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
- Obtain necessary certifications to operate equipment such as powered industrial forklifts and electric pallet jacks.
- Lift up to 50 lbs occasionally, with repetitive use of hands.
Additional Requirements:
- Food Handlers Certification (per state laws)
Machines and Equipment Operated:
- Office machines (terminal, copier/scanner, 10-key, fax, telephone)
- Forklift, electric and manual pallet jacks, push carts and hand trucks
- Garbage and cardboard compactors
Preferred Education, Experience and/or Credentials:
- Five (5) years or more as Store Manager/Director or Assistant Manager in a retail grocery store
- Management experience in a fast-paced, high-volume retail grocery store
