Supervisor of Transportation and Shop Foreman
Basic FunctionResponsible for performing skilled repair and maintenance of school buses, trucks, cars and related work as required.
Qualifications- Formal trade school or equivalent acceptable to the district.
- Four years' experience in an automotive mechanic trade with proficiency in diesel engines, air brake systems and other related systems.
- Ability to follow written and oral instruction and to complete service records and reports.
- Stay current on latest diagnostic/fleet maintenance software such as quickserv and M5.
- Ability to operate machinery, including forklift, plow truck, Bobcat, bus lifts, tractors and tow truck.
- Ability to diagnose and repair different makes and models of school buses.
- Able to create and complete work order process.
- Must have or obtain a CDL Class B Commercial Driver's License and a School Bus Driver's License with P, S and air brake endorsements to be successfully completed within the probationary period of employment.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds with assistance.
- May be required to work night shift, extended hours or holidays as transportation or district operations require.
- Must supply complete set of personal hand tools up to one inch sockets and wrenches.
- Ensure safety of buses worked on for safe transportation of students, drivers and the general public.
- Repair complex vehicle systems.
- Conduct advanced diagnostics utilizing DVOM meters, oscilloscopes, computerized diagnostic equipment to identify complex mechanical and electronic issues.
- Repair wheelchair lifts, electrical systems, engine performance issues using computers. Diagnose flow charts, wire diagrams, and service manuals.
- Respond to roadside service calls for bus repairs, accidents, and towing recovery; operate safely, access situations quickly, secure vehicles, and assist driver and supervisor in transfer of students in all weather conditions, day or night.
- Respond to immediate safety or operational concerns.
- Open and close transportation department shifts morning and night.
- Salt plow yards with all equipment as needed for snow removal and icy conditions.
- Perform heavy repairs of engine, transmissions, suspension, axle, drive shafts and brake systems.
- Cooperate fully with other transportation department employees and other district personnel.
- Handle maintenance requests as assigned by the supervisor or designee and complete associated paperwork.
- Demonstrate subject matter expertise and instruct others in their demonstrated craft skill.
- Drive school buses on routes transporting students as requested in urgent situations.
- Fill fuel tanks for school buses and district vehicles.
- Complete written or electronic maintenance records for all equipment.
- May be required to work during emergency operations.
- Perform preventative maintenance on buses and equipment, trucks, plows, skid steer, tractor.
- Answer spontaneous shop calls.
- Prepare all buses for biannual state inspection.
- Repair or replace radio/PA systems.
- Participate in maintenance operations outside of their demonstrated skill when needed.
- Operate other equipment as required including a school bus in urgent situations.
- Minor yard gate repair and clean up of fuel spills.
- Provide technical guidance and assistance to A and B mechanics on more difficult repairs.
- Rebuild engines, transmissions, and axles as needed.
