Printing Press Operator is responsible for the set‑up and operation of their designated press. This includes ensuring accuracy and quality of the product being produced. The operator is also responsible for training new employees.
Production Responsibilities- Perform required safety procedures such as PPE, ergonomics, chemical hazards, etc.
- Read and understand job jackets/orders.
- Establish and follow quality‑checking procedures in the pressroom.
- Communicate effectively with supervisor, oncoming shift, and management.
- Complete cleanup and any other procedures related to job completion.
- Assist in the set‑up of the next job (pulling ink, cleaning the press).
- Keep the press area clean (clean the area at end of shift, stay busy when the press is down).
- Maintain accurate computer entries and follow the chain of command (supervisor → department manager → plant manager).
- Be at workstation within 3 minutes of reporting time.
- Comply with all regulatory, facility food‑safety, and quality policies and procedures including product safety (GMPs).
- Quality conscious and attentive to detail.
- Must be able to see true color accurately (must not be color‑blind).
- Ability to lift and manipulate heavy weights (up to 300 lbs with assistance).
- Accurate with numbers, basic math skills, can read a tape measure and a ruler.
- Basic mechanical skills and mechanical aptitude for learning press operation.
- Confidentiality, organizational skills, shift work capability.
- Good spatial awareness and ability to distinguish right from left.
- Interpret production orders and designate specific plates.
- Recognize subtle color shades to match samples and specifications.
- Lift 50–75 lbs air shafts alone; move 100–300 lbs with mechanical devices.
- Read rulers and perform general math to measure roll diameters, widths, and package sizes.
- Operate machinery safely, standing for long periods and reacting quickly to moving parts.
- Use senses of smell and hearing to detect hazards and listen to warning signals.
- Follow detailed instructions without constant supervision and report operating problems.
- Apply mechanical knowledge to understand anilox rollers, cylinders, tension controls, safety mechanisms.
- Diagnose problems on the press, propose solutions, and implement them.
- Maintain press procedures consistently; record information electronically as required.
- Interact with quality control or management to maintain specified quality standards.
- Inspect plate quality and accept only suitable plates for printing.
- Perform meticulous work under production demand.
