Purpose of Job

Perform manual labor in the street and sanitation departments.

  • Construct and maintain city streets including the installation, repair, and patching with asphalt and gravel.
  • Construct and maintain concrete projects including the installation and repair of sidewalks and the greenway.
  • Install, dig, and clean ditches, drainage pipes, head walls, catch basins, storm drains and other drainage assignments.
  • Assist with landscaping assignments including mowing, spraying, watering, trimming, and planting.
  • Install and repair city signs.
  • Perform traffic control when needed for construction or maintenance projects.
  • Paint pavement markings, castings, grates, bridges, and other painting as needed.
  • Collect and transport litter, brush, tree limbs, bagged leaves, junk, and other debris.
  • Collect and empty refuse containers into a refuse truck, operate packer equipment and clean area around carts.
  • Deliver, pick up and repair refuse containers.

Job Duties
  • Clean and maintain facilities, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies and work special assignments as required.
  • Perform other work as required.
Primary Job Challenges
  • Performing manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Being exposed to and handling residential and commercial waste.
  • Following proper safety procedures for each assignment to ensure completion without injury or damage.
Equipment Operated
  • Variety of vehicles, equipment and tools including, but not limited to, packing equipment on sanitation trucks, jackhammer, chain saw, post driver, shovel, pick, broom, rake, chemical sprayer, weed eaters, lawn mowers, and other tools and equipment.
  • Standard office equipment including a computer, telephone, printer, and copier.
  • Automobile and/or truck with a two-way radio.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of city personnel rules and regulations and departmental policies.
  • Knowledge of the materials and equipment used in maintenance and construction of streets and sidewalks.
  • Knowledge of the materials and equipment used in solid waste collection.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to perform continuous manual labor at a steady pace.
  • Ability to work with unpleasant waste.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate manual and powered equipment and tools.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Ability to establish, communicate and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, city employees, and the general public.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Employee will work both indoors and outdoors and will sit, stand, stoop, walk, lift light and heavy objects (more than 25 pounds).
  • Employee will be exposed to electrical currents, environmental hazards, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noise, machinery and its moving parts, noxious odors, poor ventilation, and work space restriction.
  • Employee will perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or G.E.D. with some experience performing manual work, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to the required knowledge and abilities.

Required Certifications/Licenses:

Must possess a valid Class D driver license issued by the State of Tennessee. Must pass a drug screen and physical examination based on the essential functions of the job given by the city’s designated physician.
