The Inspector General (IG) leads, directs and manages the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), which is responsible for conducting independent audits, inspections, investigations, evaluations and other reviews of NGA programs and operations to promote the agency's economy, efficiency and effectiveness. The IG provides policy guidance and direction for audits, inspections, investigations, evaluations and other review activities related to NGA programs and operations, as well as sets priorities for long-range and short-range plans, and makes resource allocations to support the OIG program, to promote economy, efficiency and effectiveness, or to prevent or deter fraud and abuse.

The incumbent establishes and maintains relationships between the OIG and NGA, OIGs at other Federal agencies, and Congress for the purpose of ensuring NGA OIG's independence, sharing ideas with the OIG community, promoting economy and efficiency in program administration, and preventing and detecting fraud and abuse in NGA programs. The IG also serves as the audit liaison with external audit organizations and is a member of the Council of Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE).

The incumbent keeps the NGA Director fully informed about budget, personnel, policy, or other issues impacting on the OIG's independence and its ability to accomplish its mission. In accordance with Section 6(g)(1) of The Inspector General Act of 1978, as amended, the Inspector General follows the NGA budget request process to obtain necessary funding for mission accomplishment and transmits a timely budget estimate and request to the NGA Director annually.

The incumbent ensures all duties are adequately supervised and performance is consistent with professional standards and periodic internal assessments are made of OIG activities. The IG monitors and evaluates the progress of the organization toward meeting goals, including the publication of timely reports; makes adjustments in objectives, work plans, schedules, and commitment of resources; evaluates and provides input on the performance of employees;

makes decisions on personnel matters such as selections, promotions, awards, and training in accordance with NGA personnel policies and practices; supports NGA's equal employment opportunity (EEO) goals and E.A.R.T.H. Core Values, by positive example and appropriate action.
