Second Shift Lead

The Second Shift Lead oversees evening manufacturing operations to safely produce high-quality ink products while meeting production, quality, and customer requirements. This role supervises production personnel, coordinates daily activities, resolves production issues in real time, and serves as the primary operational leader during the second shift.

Responsibilities
  • Lead daily production activities on the second shift to achieve safety, quality, and production goals.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop production operators to build a high-performing team.
  • Ensure strict compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), safety regulations, and quality requirements.
  • Monitor production performance and key performance indicators (KPIs), taking immediate action to address operational issues.
  • Coordinate closely with Maintenance, Quality, Planning, and Warehouse teams to support smooth and efficient operations.
  • Conduct thorough shift handoffs and clearly communicate production status, issues, and priorities to other shifts and leadership.
  • Support and drive continuous improvement initiatives and process standardization across the production area.
  • Maintain accurate production documentation, batch records, and detailed shift reports.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by identifying risks, enforcing safe work practices, and ensuring a clean and orderly work area.
  • Use mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot basic equipment issues and collaborate with maintenance on more complex problems.
  • Prioritize and schedule work to meet production deadlines while balancing quality and efficiency.
  • Lead by example in accountability, communication, and operational excellence, especially in an environment with limited direct oversight.
Essential Skills
  • 3–5+ years of manufacturing experience in a chemical, ink, paint, coatings, pharmaceutical, or similar process manufacturing environment.
  • Previous leadership experience as a Lead, Team Lead, Shift Lead, or equivalent role.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and develop production operators in a manufacturing setting.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, especially in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with batch manufacturing and production scheduling (preferred but strongly valued).
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement principles.
  • Proven ability to lead effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with limited oversight.
  • Mechanical aptitude and comfort working around production equipment and processes.
  • Strong safety focus and commitment to following GMPs, SOPs, and all safety requirements.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with cross-functional teams and provide clear shift handoffs.
  • High level of accountability and reliability, including consistent attendance and punctuality.

Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in process industries such as chemical, ink, paint, coatings, or pharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience with batch production processes and related documentation.
  • Familiarity with production KPIs and performance tracking.
  • Experience in continuous improvement projects or Lean initiatives.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
  • Comfort working in an environment where both cleanliness and exposure to paint and cleaning processes are present.
