JOB ANNOUNCEMENT Position:
Vector Control Technician - Bike - Part Time - No Benefits

This is a Part Time position and does not include benefits.

Rate of Pay: $15.31 - $17.63 per hour.

SUMMARY

The Vector Control Technician – Bike performs mosquito surveillance and larval control using bicycle-based inspection routes in urban and suburban environments. This position supports the Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM) program by locating and treating breeding habitats in storm drains, gutters, irrigation features, parks, neighborhoods, and other small-scale environments where bike access provides greater efficiency. Technicians receive daily assignments and mentorship from program Coordinators while operating under the overall supervision and operational authority of the Director and Operations Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL

FUNCTIONS Urban/Residential Surveillance & Treatment

Conduct bike-based inspections of storm drains, gutters, curbside inlets, retention basins, and irrigation features. Identify mosquito breeding habitats and collect larval samples. Apply larvicides using hand and backpack equipment according to label and county standards. Log storm drains/structures treated and update GIS records accurately.

GIS & Digital Reporting

Document daily operations using iPads and GIS-based mosquito abatement software. Update maps and layers for storm drains, catch basins, and treatment locations. Report structural issues, recurring hotspots, or treatment barriers.

Equipment, Bikes & Safety

Maintain bicycles, panniers, sprayers, PPE, and field supplies. Report bike maintenance needs promptly; ensure bikes are kept in safe operating condition. Follow all pesticide safety and label requirements. Use PPE such as gloves, goggles, and protective clothing.

Integrated Program Support

Assist field teams, aerial operations, or laboratory personnel during non-biking periods or as directed. Help with trap deployment/retrieval when requested by the Lab Coordinator. Participate in team briefings, safety meetings, and ongoing training.

Public Interaction

Interact courteously with neighborhood residents and answer general questions about mosquito work. Refer detailed or complex inquiries to supervisors or program leadership.

Operational Flexibility & Emergencies

Adjust routes and priorities based on weather, mosquito activity, or operational needs. Respond to public health emergencies and carry assigned communication devices during work hours.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of urban mosquito habitats, storm drain systems, and water flow.
  • Knowledge of pesticide safety and basic vector control principles.
  • Knowledge of GIS tools and digital reporting systems.
  • Skilled in safe bicycle operation, including navigating traffic and varying terrain.
  • Skilled in communicating clearly with supervisors, team members, and the public.
  • Ability to safely apply larvicides and maintain accurate treatment records.
  • Ability to work efficiently in hot weather, rain, or variable conditions.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining team accountability.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no supervisory responsibility
. Daily direction may come from designated Coordinators, but operational authority is held by the Director and Operations Supervisor
.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Extensive outdoor work in heat, cold, rain, or dusty conditions.
  • Frequent biking on roads, bike paths, and uneven surfaces.
  • Exposure to mosquitoes, insects, chemicals, and potential hazards.
  • Requires PPE such as gloves and eye protection.
  • Regular public interaction.
