Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Description
Under the direction of the Power Plant Mechanic Operator Supervisor, this position maintains, operates, and repairs municipal generation equipment, along with dispatching and performing switching procedures for the City power and water utilities.
Duties- Maintains and operates large natural gas and diesel engines, along with hydroelectric generators, for the production of power for the City.
- Monitors municipal electrical system and culinary water systems via SCADA system.
- Maintains, installs, and repairs generation equipment.
- Maintains daily logs of all maintenance work performed.
- Performs welding, piping, and fabrication work.
- Dispatches after‑hours electrical crews to restore electric service.
- Monitors emission systems for accurate operation.
All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications- High school graduate or equivalent.
- AAS in Diesel Technology is preferred, or a similar degree.
- Must have at least two (2) years of diesel and heavy‑duty equipment experience paired with formal training from a trade school; may be considered with four (4) years of industry experience and the willingness to enroll in formal training within one (1) year of hire date.
- Any natural gas engine experience preferred.
- Power generation, welding, and piping experience is a plus.
- Must have a valid Utah driver’s license.
- Must be willing to work a rotating shift schedule and work some holidays.
Knowledge and ability in maintaining and repairing natural gas and diesel engines which includes full engine teardown, inspection and rebuild, spill timing and installation of injection pumps, rebuilding injectors, turbo replacement, web deflection, etc. Knowledge of air compressor equipment, boilers, pumps and valves, cooling tower maintenance and repair is beneficial. Broad knowledge of various types of welding, machining, and operating several types of heavy equipment including overhead crane, backhoe, forklift, etc.
would be an advantage. This job requires the ability to perform duties and work for extended periods of time with minimal supervision — often works alone. Must be able to work a rotating shift in a 24/7 plant environment.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, have good vision, and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
