The Fitter Welder is responsible for reading and interpreting blueprints and shop drawings to layout, fit, and weld structural steel components to specification. This role requires precision fitting, strong welding technique, and adherence to safety and quality standards throughout the fabrication process.
ResponsibilitiesRead and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and shop drawings to determine dimensions, materials, and assembly sequence
Measure, mark, and cut steel components using appropriate tools (torches, saws, plasma cutters)
Fit and align structural steel parts (beams, columns, plates, angles) using clamps, jigs, and fixtures prior to welding
Perform welding using MIG, TIG, and/or stick welding processes as required by project specifications
Inspect completed welds for defects, ensuring compliance with AWS (American Welding Society) codes and company quality standards
Operate overhead cranes, forklifts, or other material handling equipment as needed
Maintain and perform basic maintenance on welding equipment and tools
Follow all safety protocols, including proper use of PPE, ventilation, and fire prevention procedures
Collaborate with shop supervisors and other fitters/welders to meet production schedules
Complete quality documentation and inspection reports as required
QualificationsAWS certification (D1.1 Structural Welding Code) preferred or ability to pass welding certification tests
Proficiency reading blueprints, weld symbols, and technical drawings
Experience with MIG/FCAW welding on structural steel
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in physically demanding conditions (standing, bending, overhead work)
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
Good communication and teamwork skills
