Position Description Job OverviewMechanic Operators repair and maintain a variety of heavy equipment and trucks for road construction, grading, flood control, excavation, and other civil projects. Their responsibilities include servicing cranes, bulldozers, backhoes, graders, excavators, concrete pavers, compactors, bobcats, loaders, rollers, scrapers, off‑road articulating trucks, sweepers, farm tractors, water trucks, and related machinery. The position is seasonal, typically running from April to November, and works on site alongside paving crews (not a shop position).
Travel is required.
- Repair and maintain trucks and construction or power equipment, such as mechanized broom, backhoe, man‑lift, dump truck, snowplow, road grader, front‑end loader, hydraulic excavators, skid steers, and jetter/inductor truck.
- Repair and maintain jackhammers, mowers, brush clippers, and other small equipment and tools to support street and utility systems.
- Perform routine inspection and preventative maintenance on equipment, documenting defects or repairs for the supervisor; clean equipment.
- Wear personal protective equipment as required.
- Work in varying weather conditions and noisy, dusty environments.
- Operate in environments where heavy equipment, power tools, and traffic are present.
- Be exposed to heights up to 50 feet and depths of up to 80 feet.
- Maintain 20/20 vision or be corrected to it.
- Maneuver under and over equipment, climb into/out of cabs using steps and ladders.
- Operate machinery in constant sitting posture.
- Use foot and hand controls consistently.
- Use track spade/shovel to clear mud from tracks and underbelly as needed.
- Move barricades/sand bags to clear the area.
- Stand, walk, and maneuver around the machine, including uneven terrain.
- Lift, move, and carry loads up to 50 pounds frequently.
- Operate hands to input information, handle tools of varying size and weight, and operate controls.
- Reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, twist, crouch, or crawl; speak and listen; and smell or taste as required.
- Maintain various vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
- Endure frequent exposure to high noise levels.
- Understand and comply with all company safety requirements, policies, and training.

Position RequirementsRequired Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- General knowledge of the heavy highway construction industry.
- General knowledge of heavy equipment operation.
- Knowledge of repair and maintenance of heavy construction equipment.
- Understanding of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment.
- Reliable transportation.
