Description

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time one-year position of Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and Art History to begin August 15, 2026.

Applicants must have current authorization to work in the United States. Gustavus will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this position. Gustavus is not an e-verify institution.

Position Overview

  • Teach 4 course sections over the academic year. Typically, 2 in the Fall and 2 in the Spring. Two of the sections in Fall and/or Spring may be the same course. Primary teaching responsibilities will include teaching courses in Gender and Art (ART-250), and Reimagining Museums (ART-298) (an interdisciplinary course in Museum Studies that utilizes the Hillstrom Museum of Art and other campus collections for experiential learning).

    Other courses could include Ritual and Relic, Religion and Art (ART-239), Art and Archeology of the Americas (ART-265), Ochre to Optics:
    Histories of Color (ART-101), or Why We Make Things:

Prerequisites

What We’re Looking For

  • PhD or ABD in Art History preferred (we will consider MA in Art History, Museum Studies, or Public History)

What’s Preferred

  • Evidence of effectiveness in teaching
  • Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate students
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds and identities
  • Experience as an instructor of record

What We Offer

Based on data from AAUP (American Association of University Professors) and CUPA (College and University Professional Association), we offer a competitive starting salary range of $26,405 to $29,070 for a 9-month academic year. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience, training, certifications/licensure, market factors, departmental budgets, and responsibility.
