Description

The registered nurse is accountable for the provisions of nursing care to all patients in the hospital and to prescribe, delegate and coordinate that care as part of the daily responsibility. The registered nurse will also participate in unit management, staff orientation and self-development. Sincere interest in nursing with knowledge in general medical/surgical nursing and the ability to use the nursing process.

Ability to interact in a positive and cooperative manner with courtesy and respect towards co-workers, patients and other customers.

Role and Reporting
  • Charge Nurse is first level of administration assigned to the unit in the absence of the Nursing Manager and House Manager.
  • Appropriate and timely communication must be maintained with on duty Nursing Manager/House Manager.
  • Informs Nurse Manager/ House Manager of unit issues and concerns.
  • Seeks assistance from Nurse Manager/ House Manager with staffing issues.
  • Completes assigned charge nurse tasks.
  • Assists in evaluating standards of care through quality activities.
  • Promotes and influences a positive atmosphere in the department of nursing.
  • Act as initial incident commander and leader for the facility during a safety or security event:
    Fire, weather. Know where to find the Disaster Plans and be prepared to carry them out.
  • The charge nurse is responsible for the immediate functioning of the unit.
  • Organizes, prioritizes and delegates work flow including making assignments.
  • Participates in decision making regarding patient flow; admissions, discharges and transfers (ADT).
  • The charge nurse is responsible for overseeing that ADT transactions happen in real time.
  • Collaborates with other health care disciplines/ departments to maintain communication and provide optimal level of patient care; lab, social services.
  • Ensures daily staffing requirements are met
  • Assists in nursing care management of the unit to provide optimal level of care to all patients.
  • Keeps informed about the status of all patients.
  • Train other nurses in patient care.
  • Charge Nurse may be assigned patient care responsibilities.
  • The charge nurse supports excellent customer service by rounding on staff, patients and their families and working to resolve conflicts.
Unit Tasks
  • Oversees completion of unit specific administrative tasks (e.g. census sheet, narcotic count, real time ADT).
Orthopedic Center of Excellence skills as listed below to include Hip, Knee, Shoulder and Spine procedures
  • Clinical review of preoperative chart for best practice.
  • Coordination of surgery schedule with Surgery HUC.
  • Coordinate patient’s activities with PT/OT.
  • Coordinates with Social Services and Utilization Review to complete patient discharge.
  • Acts as a clinical resource for orthopedic surgery patients.
  • Education per current DNV requirements as defined by CR.5 DNV regulatory guidelines. Education to include eight hours on hire and annually.
  • Education for charge nurse orientation.
