Position: CNC Lathe Machinist 3

A CNC Machinist 3 is responsible for understanding the set up and operation of CNC and manual Lathes or Milling machines. The machinist should be able to read and interpret blueprints and understand basic tooling principles for the machines.

Responsibilities Machine Operations
  • Set Up, program, and operate CNC and manual Lathes or Milling machines according to HUNTING procedures and engineering blueprints.
  • Demonstrated ability to setup a machine and run the job with no supervision.
  • Knowledgeable of all associated precision measuring tools of the shop.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience of Lathe and Mill programming languages by assisting others in minor program adjustments.
  • Be able to choose tooling for all types of geometries and applications.
  • Have knowledge in tooling manufacturer’s insert grades and tool holders in which they specialize.
  • Be able to troubleshoot any issues on the machines.
  • Must communicate with engineers and planners daily to assure routers and schedules are accurate.
  • Provides On-the-Job-Training and conducts training sessions on the machines for apprentice and journeyman machinist at the direction of supervisor.
  • Supports and assists with machine PM program as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Quality
  • Read and understand Hunting Quality Manual.
  • Understands the principles of a “Lean” shop and “Flow” manufacturing.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret critical dimensions on engineering blueprints.
  • Responsible for dimensional and quality requirements of components.
  • Working understanding and knowledge of SPC (Statistical Process Control) and can utilize SPC software.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a detailed program database to include revision dates, program revision and or improved method record.
  • Demonstrated ability to pull a team of peers and various disciplines together and lead Kaizen event to improve quality and throughput while reducing costs.
  • Participates in and supports “Six-Sigma” projects as required.
  • Identify potential cost reductions regarding to product design and can communicate to Supervisors and Engineering for evaluation.
  • Proactively identify and implement ways to reduce set up times and then communicate such that routers and schedules reflect the improvements.
  • Play an active role regarding to “Lean” processes by working and communicating with Planning, Quality, Peers and Engineering to identify and implement ways to improve flow to increase throughput and eliminate waste.
  • Identify potential cost reductions regarding to product design and communicate to Leads and Engineering for evaluation.
  • Understands the needs of calibration cycles of test tools.
Training
  • Hunting Practices and Procedures.
  • Understands all shop and machine equipment Safety Hazards.
  • Assist in the training of employees in the “Lean” and “Flow” philosophies and practices.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Hazardous communication
Required Skills and Experience
  • Required:

    High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: A technical school certificate; completion of Apprentice program.
  • Minimum of 1 year to 2 years in Manual Lathe or Mill operation and 8 years minimum experience in CNC Lathe or Mill operation.
  • Multi-axis, Multi-spindle and multi-turret experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years to 5 years of experience in programming.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience of Lathe or Mill programming languages by assisting others in minor program adjustments and can program all machines to a new product.
  • Experience in an Engineer-to-Order or Make-to-Order shop environment.
  • Experience, training, and understanding of “Lean Manufacturing Principles” a plus.
  • Proven ability to read and understand blueprints.
Physical Demands
  • This position requires an onsite presence to perform the essential duties.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is primarily in the office performing work on a computer. Employee will be required to walk and be on the manufacturing floor.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, use hands to touch, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
