Description
Job OverviewThe Craftsman Helper will assist a skilled trade employee such as a General craftsman, Plumber, Electrician, Carpenter, Roofer and/or Painter. This incumbent will perform a variety of semi‑skilled tasks below the journeyman level while under direct and close supervision.
Position DescriptionEssential Duties and Responsibilities Operational Assistance
- Assist plumbers in repairing and replacing commodes, urinals, sinks, faucets and fixtures, drinking fountains, water heaters, opening clogged drains, food disposals, urinals, commodes, and sewer lines as well as installing and replacing water lines, sewer lines and gas lines
- Assist electricians in installing electrical conduit and wiring, repairing and replacing electric motors and controls, repairing and replacing lighting fixtures, switches and outlets, locating and repairing trouble in electrical circuits as well as maintaining fire alarms, bells, clocks and PA systems
- Assist carpenters in building, installing and repairing cabinets, counter tops, book cases, desks, tables, shelves, and bulletin boards, repairing and installing doors and paneling and building forms for pouring concrete
- Assist painters with campus and facility painting projects and preparation
- Assist roofers with roofing projects that include working on roofs, gutters and building canopies as well as carrying tools and materials
- Assist General Craftsman with projects ,include door closers, broken windows, concrete work and other duties as assign
- Load materials, tool and equipment on trucks
- Carry tools and equipment to and from work sites while keeping inventory of tools used
- Keep work area clean and orderly
- Develop skills with on the job training

Qualification Requirements
- High School diploma or GED
- Valid Texas Drivers License
- Minimum of 1 year of customer service experience preferred
- Ability to work with common manual and power tools and equipment
- Ability to receive instructions orally and written
- Ability to work with others
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to read, write and speak English
- Ability to work with various types of tools
- Ability to work collaboratively with others and take directions from skilled trades

The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers and presentation materials.
The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties.
May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.
- Work requires sufficient physical strength, agility, dexterity and hand-eye-foot coordination to perform all essential functions, including lifting and carrying heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds, reaching in front of body and overhead while holding objects, standing for extended periods of time, bending over equipment, crawling under equipment, working in confined spaces and in uncomfortable positions, and balancing self, materials and tools on high and/or slanted surfaces.
Work also involves frequent kneeling, squatting, pushing, pulling, reaching and climbing. Work is performed both inside and outside buildings and facilities. Employee is subject to adverse weather conditions, extreme temperatures and high noise levels. Employee is also exposed to potential hazards associated with cleaning chemicals, flammable liquids, and the operation of tools, equipment and machinery. Employee is required to wear and use safety clothing and equipment and to comply with safety policies and procedures.
