Position: Traffic Signal Technician I

Position Summary

The Signal Technician will construct, install, test, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain traffic signals, school zone flashers, and streetlights. The technician assists with setting up controllers and installing vehicle detection systems, communication equipment, and other traffic signal equipment. The technician assists with signs and markings responsibilities when necessary, performs work related to the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic control signs, pavement markings, sign fabrication, guardrail, and permanent barricades, and operates a variety of light and heavy equipment, hand, and power tools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain vehicles and various light equipment and tools.
  • Install, maintain, and inspect street signs, traffic signals, and streetlights.
  • Remove, measure, layout, and paint pavement markings – thermoplastic.
  • Maintain and repair street pavement and asphalt.
  • Secure work areas with traffic signs, cones, and barricades, and direct traffic around work areas as necessary.
  • Maintain and paint stop bars.
  • Maintain faded signs and alternate flags and banners around the city.
  • Be willing to work weekends, after hours, and nights to support traffic management and operations for special events or emergency situations.
  • Assist with setting up traffic control or detours necessary for special events and emergency situations.
  • Work overnight shifts for the installation of pavement markings as required.
  • Provide backup assistance, on‑call coverage, and support to other city departments assigned.
  • Travel to work sites and attend meetings, conferences, and training.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours.
  • Work on‑call and overtime as required once becoming IMSA Traffic Signal Level I Certified.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of traffic signs to ensure compliance with current federal, state, and local standards.
  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on equipment, promptly identifying and reporting malfunctions.
  • Ensure equipment is clean, operational, and safe for daily use.
  • Wear safety apparel at all times and follow safety rules and regulations.
  • Perform related duties as assigned; subject to 24‑hour recall for emergency situations.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Operate and maintain applicable vehicles, equipment, and tools of assigned area.
  • Provide repairs and maintenance work.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and analyze issues.
  • Identify and implement solutions.
  • Prepare reports, logs, and activity documentation.
  • Work independently or in a team environment and exercise good judgment.
  • Understand traffic control and work zone standards.
Education, Experience and Training (Certification/Licensure)
  • High School Diploma or GED and three (3) years of experience related to the area of assignment.
  • IMSA Signs and Pavement Markings Technician I Certification strongly preferred.
  • IMSA Work Zone Safety certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of date of hire (TEEX course certification will be considered).
  • IMSA Level I Certification in Traffic Signals or ability to obtain within 12 months of date of hire (TEEX course certifications will be considered).
Training

Valid Texas Driver's License Class –

C.

ADA and Other Requirements
  • Must be able to walk, bend and lift heavy loads up to a maximum of 100 pounds. Working conditions are primarily outdoors.
  • Perform work in an undesirable or hazardous environment including inclement weather, confined spaces, improper illumination, and traffic.
