Substitute

Under the supervision of the Building Administrator and/or other designated administrator, the Substitute Teacher implements an instructional program as set forth by the classroom teacher. The Substitute Teacher is responsible for adhering to the duties and responsibilities of a teacher or other specified staff member as outlined in the Stafford County School Board Policies and Regulations and the Substitute Teacher's required training.

Communicate the lesson objective and its importance to students and maintain an organized program of instruction based on the lesson plans provided by the teacher. Utilize appropriate and varied teaching techniques, materials, resources, and learning activities both in class and out of class; and adapt and adjust instructional presentation of subject content to students' needs and interest. Develop a resource of materials appropriate to a variety of academic levels, which may be used to augment the teacher's prepared lesson plans as necessary and assume responsibility for care of materials, equipment, and facilities in the absence of the teacher.

Practice and promote positive interaction with and among students, and encourage self-direction and self-motivation in students. Leave the room and materials in a neat and orderly manner and provide a summary of the day's activities for the classroom teacher. Endeavor to preserve the regular routine of the classroom and implement fair and consistent methods for managing student behavior. Complete a full teaching day (or half day as required) according to the hours for the specific school level.

Education Attainment (Required):
High School Diploma or equivalent. Education Attainment (Preferred):
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university. Relevant Experience (Required):
To sub as a para in an Elementary school: substitutes must be at least 18 and in their second year of college
- Must provide transcripts. To sub as a teacher in an Elementary school: substitutes must be at least 19 (no exceptions). To sub in a Middle school for any assignment type: substitutes must be at least 20 and in your senior year of college
- Must provide transcripts. To sub in a High school for any assignment type: substitute must be at least 21 or older. Must complete orientation and related training prior to hire. Must complete yearly training for recertification purposes.

To successfully complete the onboarding and work as a substitute, substitutes must be able to independently:
Understand spoken directions in English. Communicate clearly with students and staff in English. Read and follow written instructions, including lesson plans or classroom directions. Respond appropriately in routine, fast-paced, or emergency situations. Write basic notes or documentation when needed. Attend and complete an in-person onboarding appointment independently (aside from health/ADA requirements) and in English.

Engage in ongoing professional development relevant to position. Respond to written and oral requests for information promptly and thoroughly. Maintain a clean, neat appearance and dress appropriate to position and duties. Maintain a record of appropriate attendance and punctuality. Serve as a role model for students, colleagues, and the general public. Work in close harmony with supervisor(s) and colleagues. Comply with all division policies and regulations, including but not limited to guidelines for confidentiality and professional conduct, as well as all site-based procedures and protocols.
