The Coordinator of Elementary Science designs, implements, and refines the division’s K-5 science curriculum to ensure academic excellence and alignment with state standards. The Coordinator facilitates the implementation of evidence-based instructional methodologies, High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM), and deep cognitive engagement to support student sense making in science. The Coordinator serves as a resource for school administrators and teachers, grades K-5, to ensure all students master rigorous, standards-aligned content.
WorkObjectives / Essential Functions
- Partner with school leadership and teachers to analyze science data and implement instructional improvements.
- Work with building principals to improve the quality of science instruction at their schools and provide targeted support to administrative teams and teachers to build local instructional capacity.
- Facilitate professional learning communities and collaborative planning sessions for teachers and staff to ensure consistent implementation of the science curriculum.
- Encourage excellence in science teaching by supporting efforts of the Science Lead Teachers in elementary schools.
- Develop teaching strategies and resource materials to implement curriculum.
- Assist in offering professional learning opportunities in the area of science.
- Perform classroom visitations and consultations.
- Serve as chairperson on science curriculum committees and update the K-5 science curriculum as needed.
- Collaborate with coordinators and supervisors to integrate and/or align the science program with the total instructional program, and help define goals for the instructional program.
- Serve as chairperson on science textbook adoption committee.
- Maintain current knowledge of developments in curriculum and staff development in science.
- Assess equipment needs and priorities for K-5 science instruction.
- Coordinate and facilitate new teacher professional learning.
- Co-represent Stafford County Schools for the Piedmont Regional Science Fair and coordinate K-5 county participation.
- Represent, where appropriate, the school division in the work of regional, state, and/or national curriculum associations and study groups.
- Formulate, manage, and monitor the annual K-5 science budget, ensuring all fiscal allocations are directly aligned with divisional strategic goals, evidence-based instructional priorities, and the procurement of High-Quality Instructional Materials.
- Seek grant opportunities to augment county resources for programs and administer any programs for which grant money is received.
- Negotiate price agreements for purchase of science materials with major science supply companies.
- Serve as a liaison with area colleges, businesses and other institutions on grants, course offerings, and projects involving science.
- Work with individuals and committees on problems of content and other issues related to science.
- Assist in the organizing and planning of specific summer school programs.
- Conduct analysis of academic achievement and progress of groups of students on K-5 science standards.
- Education Attainment (Required): Master’s degree in elementary or science education or a related field
- Education Attainment (Preferred): Bachelor’s degree in a related field and relevant experience considered
- Relevant Experience (Required): Three (3) or more years experience as an elementary classroom teacher with demonstrated success as a teacher leader, supporting student academic growth in science
- Relevant Experience (Preferred): Experience at the building or division level as an instructional leader, such as service as a department chair or leader of a professional learning community
- Industry Licensure or Certifications (Required): Hold or be eligible for a Professional License issued by the Virginia Department of Education with an endorsement in elementary education or science
