Under the supervision of the School Principal, this position will provide assistance as either a School Crossing Guard and/or Cafeteria Host with shared responsibilities by supporting the educational process. Responsibilities include ensuring the safety and welfare of students during classroom and non‑classroom activities, minimizing the frequency and/or severity of harmful incidents, and communicating observations or incidents that may impact the general well‑being of students, school personnel, and visitors.
The School Crossing Guard assists in the control of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at an assigned location for a prescribed period of time to ensure the safety of school children and the orderly flow of vehicular traffic. The Cafeteria Host monitors student behavior and facilitates the orderly progression of students through the cafeteria and cleans the eating area during lunch periods.
MainJob Tasks And Responsibilities Crossing Guard Duties Before and After School
- Give clear, concise hand signals to stop vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic to prevent movement until all pedestrians have crossed the street.
- Ensure signals are understood and obeyed before moving vehicular or pedestrian traffic to guarantee school children cross only at proper, designated locations.
- Note any present or potential traffic hazards and report them to the Sheriff’s Office as soon as possible.
- Report any vehicle code violations and write reports as necessary.
- Attend appropriate training sessions or meetings as requested or required by the immediate supervisor, Sheriff’s Office, or Safety & Security Office.
- Enforce school rules and regulations.
- Report students or pedestrians who do not adhere to safe street crossing procedures to their immediate supervisor.
- Assist with the orderly progression of students through cafeteria lines and seating at appropriate tables.
- Monitor students’ behavior.
- Facilitate the movement of students through the cafeteria in an orderly and appropriate manner.
- Assist students with their lunches, if required, such as opening milk cartons and providing utensils.
- Clean up spills and dropped food to maintain a safe environment.
- Assist with the cleaning of tables and sweeping of floors following lunch periods.
- Ensure that students, employees, and visitors are aware of the district’s on‑site safety policies and the potential consequences for violations.
- Report incidents, survey student behavior, and visually scan various areas to ensure compliance with established regulations and maintain a safe learning environment.
- Provide direction, control, and supervision by escorting students, personnel, and guests to offices or special locations.
- Maintain administrative visibility, accountability, and protection by keeping a close eye on the school’s facilities and directing outsiders appropriately.
- Monitor student behavior during and between assigned periods and check facilities—including restrooms, hallways, cafeteria, school grounds, and parking lot—for student compliance with established guidelines.
- Engage in ongoing professional development relevant to the position.

- Maintain a clean, neat appearance appropriate to the position.

- High School Diploma or its equivalent.
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must be certified by the Sheriff’s Office to conduct Crossing Guard duties.
