Mathematics Specialist
Under the supervision of Building Administrator and Coordinator of Mathematics, the position will collaborate with school and district leadership to support high-quality, equitable mathematics instruction. This role focuses on building teacher capacity, improving student outcomes, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement in mathematics teaching and learning.
Main Job Tasks and ResponsibilitiesInstruction, Coaching, and Professional Learning
- Support implementation of research-based instructional practices that promote active, inclusive mathematics learning for all students.
- Foster a culture of reflection and continuous improvement through personalized professional learning and goal-setting with teachers using coaching cycles to build teacher capacity regarding effective mathematics teaching practices that allow all students to reach high standards.
- Collaborate with professional learning communities (PLCs) to drive data-informed instructional decisions and curricular alignment.
- Design and deliver targeted professional development aligned with school and district improvement goals.
- Mentor novice and early-career teachers to strengthen their mathematics content knowledge and pedagogical skills.
- Monitor the impact of coaching and professional learning on student achievement using clear metrics and reflective practices.
- Model and develop high-impact, differentiated instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs of learners.
- Actively engage in continuous professional growth to enhance content expertise and coaching effectiveness.
Curriculum, Assessment and Collaborative Leadership
- Provide leadership in interpreting and applying assessment data to guide instruction and identify student needs.
- Collaborate in the design, refinement, and implementation of mathematics curriculum, pacing guides, and instructional resources.
- Facilitate reflection and feedback conversations with teachers or teams based on student work, assessment, and observational data.
- Promote equitable access to rigorous mathematics instruction by addressing opportunity gaps and instructional barriers.
- Ensure instructional practices and resources support coherence, vertical alignment, and high expectations for all students.
- Collaborate with school and district teams to design and monitor programs aimed at improving student achievement (e.g., SIP goals, intervention plans).
- Support school-wide efforts to build meaningful partnerships with families and community stakeholders.
- Serve as a bridge between district initiatives and school-based implementation to ensure alignment and support.

- Perform other related duties as required/assigned.
- Master's Degree or higher in Education with a concentration in one of the following areas:
Curriculum and Instruction, Administration and Supervision, or Mathematics Leadership preferred - Hold or is eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in K-8 Mathematics Specialist preferred
- Five (5) years of successful full-time classroom teaching experience in Elementary and Middle School, multiple grade levels preferred
- Knowledge

- Development of mathematical understanding and mathematical proficiency
- Current theory and research based practices in mathematics instruction, current researched based mathematics curriculum programs and in a wide variety of assessment strategies

Physical Requirements
- Work environment is inside a classroom, with quiet noise level, temperatures that are controlled, and no exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.
