Job Summary And Purpose
  • This position will coordinate and conduct the developmental screening process for Child Find. This person must have an understanding of typical and atypical early childhood development, ages 2-5, understanding of speech and language development and dual language acquisition development, strong knowledge of the special education process, strong understanding of the Response to Intervention process, ability to build relationships with families, possess organizational skills, communicate effectively with outside agencies, and the ability to collaborate with the Child Find team.

Objectives/Essential Functions
  • Practice and promote positive interactions with children and families by demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and a commitment to supporting early identification of children who may have developmental delays or disabilities.
  • Plan, organize, and implement Child Find screening activities in accordance with federal, state, and division requirements.
  • Administer developmental screening tools to children ages 2-5 and accurately interpret and communicate screening results to families.
  • Provide families with information regarding typical child development, developmental milestones, community resources, and the Child Find process.
  • Offer guidance to families regarding developmental concerns and community-based supports when appropriate.
  • Utilize developmentally appropriate screening materials and assessment tools to gather information regarding a child's development.
  • Maintain accurate records of screenings, referrals, and communications with families.
  • Answer and manage the Child Find screening hotline and respond to inquiries from families, community agencies, childcare providers, healthcare professionals, and division staff.
  • Maintain the Child Find screening calendar and coordinate screening appointments with families and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Facilitate Student Educational Committee (SEC) meetings, as appropriate, and participate in multidisciplinary eligibility and planning meetings.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members, community agencies, childcare providers, healthcare professionals, and division staff to support the identification and referral of children suspected of having disabilities.
  • Coordinate with Early Childhood Special Education staff to ensure a seamless transition from the Child Find screening and eligibility process to the initiation of special education services for children found eligible.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local Child Find requirements, including timelines, documentation, and reporting.
  • Complete required reports, documentation, and data submissions accurately and within established timelines.
  • Accept responsibilities outside of direct screening activities as they relate to the Child Find program and the goals of the division.
  • Coordinate with Early Childhood Special Education staff to ensure a seamless transition from the Child Find eligibility process to the initiation of special education services for children found eligible.
Education and Experience

Education Attainment (Required): Bachelor's degree required in Early Childhood Special Education, Special Education, Early Childhood Education or a closely related field.

Education Attainment (Preferred): Master's degree preferred.

Relevant Experience (Required): Three (3) years of experience working with children in an educational or early intervention setting. Experience collaborating with families, multidisciplinary teams, community agencies, and school based providers.

Relevant Experience (Preferred):

Industry Licensure or Certifications (Required): Hold or be eligible for a valid teaching license which meets Commonwealth of Virginia requirements with specific endorsement in Special Education.

  • Thorough knowledge of child development and developmental milestones for children ages birth through five.
  • Knowledge of developmental screening practices and early childhood assessment procedures.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to Child Find, preschool special education, and eligibility determination.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with families regarding developmental concerns, screening processes, and special education procedures.
  • Ability to interpret developmental information and screening data to support appropriate referrals and decision-making.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with families, community partners, and school personnel.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain attention to detail, and meet established timelines.
