Overview

Deputy Sheriff – Field Operations

Starting at $29.00/hour or $60,324.58 with no prior experience. Full salary range for this career is $60,324.58 - $. Additional compensation may be earned via shift schedule, night differential, holiday and premium pay.

Responsibilities
  • Performs responsible protective service work in the Sheriff’s Office involving a variety of general or support duty assignments and involving an element of personal danger; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Deputy Sergeant. Must be available to work any shift of the day on any day of the week, including holidays and weekends.
  • Field Operations Deputies work an assigned 11.5-hour shift ; ; ) rotating on/off duty in a 3 on >2 off >2 on >3 off pattern
  • Enforces laws; investigates criminal activity; serves civil papers; ensures safety of public; testifies in Court; maintains records and files; prepares reports.
  • Opens and operates a patrol vehicle to observe for violations, suspicious activities or disturbances of law and order; responds to radio dispatches and calls; makes arrests; uses force when necessary; conducts investigations; collects and preserves evidence; prepares detailed reports.
  • Interviews victims and witnesses; secures property and evidence; serves civil process and criminal arrest warrants.
  • Performs a variety of crime prevention duties; may serve as DARE officer or other special assignments; performs inmate jail and court security duties; supervises trustees; transports inmates to and from court.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge,

Skills And Abilities

Some knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings; some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff’s Office; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously, firmly and tactfully with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances;

possession of physical agility and endurance; skill in the use of firearms and the operation of a motor vehicle. Possession of all qualifications as required by the Code of Virginia, the Department of Criminal Justice Services, and the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

Education and Experience
  • Graduation from high school or high school equivalency.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must obtain and maintain all Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, and the State Criminal Justice System training and education requirements for the position.
  • Required to be a United States citizen and must be 21 years of age prior to an academy graduation.
  • This position is designated as essential and must report to work during times when the local government/agencies are closed, is subject to call back and hold over to maintain minimum staffing 24/7.
  • The successful applicant must complete pass physical agility testing, interview, polygraph examination, full background investigation to include a criminal history check, physical examination, psychological examination and drug and alcohol testing.
Special Requirements

This is heavy work requiring exertion of weight; work includes climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication, hearing, and visual acuity requirements are described; exposure to inside/outside environmental conditions and potential hazards. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
