Overview
Deputy Sheriff - School Resource Officer
Must possess current Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Certification
School Resource Officers are assigned to County middle and high schools to provide information to students, parents and staff regarding law enforcement and the criminal justice system. SROs maintain high visibility at the schools, attend student functions, teach curriculum units and provide classroom presentations on varied topics. Performs protective service work in the Sheriff’s Office involving a variety of general or support duties with potential dangers.
Work is performed under the supervision of a School Resource Officer Sergeant.
- Enforce laws; investigate criminal activity; maintain records and files; prepare reports; testify in court
- Work collaboratively with schools to resolve problems that threaten school safety
- Reinforce clear expectations for behavior through enforcement of laws and crime prevention activities
- Engage students to improve relationships and encourage reporting of criminal activity
- Identify and address security-related issues within the school
- Provide classroom presentations on crime prevention and the fundamentals of the law
- Teach law-related education, de-escalation techniques, and conflict resolution to students and staff
- Coordinate and oversee youth programs
- Coordinate security coverage for after-school activities and large events
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of police methods, procedures; general knowledge of county geography; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to prepare clear comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the public; ability to analyze situations and act quickly and effectively; physical agility; firearm and vehicle operation skills; fulfillment of all qualifications required by the Code of Virginia, DCJS, and the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
Education and Experience
Must possess current Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Certification
- 2 years of prior law enforcement experience (REQUIRED)
- High school diploma or high school equivalency
- Valid Virginia driver’s license
- Must meet and maintain all Sheriff’s Office and State Criminal Justice System training requirements for the position
- Must be a United States citizen and at least 21 years old at time of hire
- Must complete School Resource Officer basic course or be able to complete it
- This is essential personnel; may be required to report during times when local government facilities are closed
- 8-hour to 12-hour shifts may be required; subject to call back to maintain minimum staffing 24/7
- Ability to pass physical agility testing, interview, polygraph, background investigation, medical examination, psychological evaluation, and drug/alcohol testing
- Physical requirements include heavy lifting, climbing, standing, and other routine exertions; exposure to varied environmental conditions and possible exposure to blood borne pathogens; may require PPE
