Job Summary and
Purpose:
The School Security Officer Coordinator is responsible for the strategic management, supervision, and standardization of the district’s security personnel. This individual ensures that every school building is staffed by highly trained, compliant, and professional SSOs who operate under a unified safety framework. The coordinator acts as the primary liaison between campus-level security, school administrators and the Department of Safety and Security.
Objectives / Essential Functions
- Collaborate with school administrators to directly oversee all school-based security officers, providing regular performance reviews through on-site field assessments.
- Participate in the hiring process to ensure candidates align with the division’s safety culture.
- Maintain rigorous records to ensure 100% of SSOs meet state and local mandatory requirements (e.g., state certification, CPR/First Aid, Handle with Care).
- Develop and implement an annual training calendar covering de-escalation, mental health awareness, active threat response, incident response, and proper documentation.
- Develop and enforce standardized operating procedures for all buildings to ensure consistency in patrol, entrance monitoring, and public interaction.
- Ensure all officers adhere to district standards regarding equipment, uniform appearance, and professional conduct.
- Review all daily activity logs and incident reports for accuracy, clarity, and legal compliance.
- Manage the division’s security reporting software, ensuring incidents such as use of force, medical emergencies, or criminal activities are documented within 24 hours.
- Identify trends in security incidents across the district and recommend proactive measures to mitigate recurring risks.
- Establish and maintain a centralized database to track all security metrics, including incident types and resolutions.
- Assist and respond to incidents and emergencies as needed.
Education Attainment (Preferred): Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, or related field.
Relevant Experience (Required): Minimum of five (5) years in law enforcement, military, or high-level corporate security.
Relevant Experience (Preferred): Two (2) years in a supervisory capacity.
Industrial Licensure or CertificationsRequired Licensures and
Certifications:
Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
- Ability to capture school incident data to identify trends and develop actionable insights.
- Exceptional project management skills to track dozens of moving cases across multiple locations.
- Engage in ongoing professional development relevant to position.
- Respond to written and oral requests for information promptly and thoroughly.
- Maintain a clean, neat appearance and dress appropriate to position and duties.
- Maintain a record of appropriate attendance and punctuality.
- Serve as a role model for students, colleagues, and the general public.

- Comply with all division policies and regulations, including guidelines for confidentiality and professional conduct, as well as all site-based procedures and protocols.
