Salary

$29.00 per hour plus 1:1 credit for years of sworn law enforcement service, up to 10 years or 50%, whichever is greater.

• Current Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Certification (Road/Patrol) with 2+ years of road patrol experience in a sworn position.
• Completed or able to complete the School Resource Officer basic course.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver’s license in the state of Virginia.
• United States citizenship.
• At least 21 years of age at the time of hire.
• Meet and maintain all Stafford County Sheriff’s Office and State Criminal Justice System training and education requirements.
• Reside in the Commonwealth of Virginia and possess a valid VA driver’s license within 60 days of establishing residency.

• Enforce laws, investigate criminal activity, maintain records and files, prepare reports, and testify in court.
• Work collaboratively with schools to resolve problems that threaten school safety.
• Reinforce clear expectations for appropriate behavior through law enforcement, law-related education, and crime prevention activities.
• Engage students to improve relationships, encourage reporting of criminal activity, and reduce delinquent behavior.
• Identify and address security-related issues within the school.
• Provide classroom presentations on crime prevention and fundamental concepts of law; teach law-related education, de-escalation techniques, and conflict resolution to students and staff.
• Coordinate and oversee youth programs.
• Coordinate security coverage for after‑school activities and events that produce large crowds.

This position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; lifting or dragging short distances of up to 165 pounds occasionally; climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing ideas by spoken word, and conveying detailed instructions loudly or quickly;

hearing for perceiving information at normal spoken word levels and making fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, analyzing written or computer data, inspecting small defects or parts, operating machines or vehicles. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and wearing a respirator.

Exposure to blood borne pathogens and requirement to wear specialized personal protective equipment is possible.

The successful applicant must pass physical ability testing, interview, polygraph examination, a full background investigation including criminal history check, a physical examination, a psychological examination, and drug and alcohol testing. The role is essential and may require reporting during times when local government agencies are closed, subject to call back and hold over to maintain minimum staffing 24/7.
