Job Summary and Purpose
  • The Coordinator of Attendance Services serves as a liaison between the Department of Student Support Services, Attendance Social Workers, and building-level Attendance teams to reduce chronic absenteeism within Stafford County Public Schools (SCPS). This position will ensure compliance with relevant compulsory attendance laws, coordinate with courts and related outside agencies when necessary, and oversee the work of Attendance Social Workers providing direct services in schools.

    The successful Coordinator will propose and lead the execution of strategies that address the underlying causes driving absenteeism and assess effectiveness of in‑school and out‑of‑school engagement supports and resources for students at risk of chronic absenteeism.
Work Objectives/Essential Functions
  • Collaborates with district-level leadership to assess attendance issues and design a strategy for addressing underlying challenges.
  • Oversees Attendance Social Workers providing direct service to the buildings.
  • Consults with school personnel to develop and implement effective attendance monitoring and implementation of Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 interventions at the building level.
  • Consults with school personnel and Attendance Social Workers to identify barriers to student attendance and appropriate interventions and solutions to encourage attendance.
  • Maintains a caseload of students requiring a high-level of intervention due to attendance concerns, as staffing requires.
  • Maintains an effective working relationship with Attendance Social Workers, school personnel, students, parents, and others concerned with the welfare of students.
  • Provides education on available community resources and assists Attendance Social Workers and families in accessing when appropriate.
  • Conducts in-service workshops and/or consultative conferences for school personnel and the community as needed.
  • Contributes to mid-year and end-of-year evaluations of Attendance Social Workers.
  • Maintains current knowledge of Federal, State, and local compulsory attendance laws.
  • Facilitates regular meetings with school personnel to ensure an understanding of current policies and practices related to compulsory attendance laws.
  • Consults with school personnel, parents, students, and community agencies to enforce compulsory attendance laws.
  • Maintains district-wide data regarding referrals to Attendance Services, court-involved cases, and efficacy of interventions provided.
  • Files Child in Need of Supervision petitions in Stafford Juvenile and Domestic Relations court when appropriate.
  • Files criminal charges against the parents when appropriate.
  • Works cooperatively and collaboratively with school personnel and outside agencies.
  • Provides supervision for Attendance Social Workers.
Education and Experience
  • Master of Social Work (MSW) from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program.
  • Four (4) years of experience as a School Social Worker or Attendance Social Worker; comparable experience outside of a K-12 public education will be considered.
Required Licensures and Certifications
  • Hold or be eligible for a Pupil Personnel license issued by the Virginia Department of Education with an endorsement as a School Social Worker.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the use of compulsory attendance laws.
  • Clear understanding of the McKinney‑Vento Act and all requirements.
  • Knowledge of the juvenile court system and other community agencies.
  • Knowledge of child development and growth stages.
  • Knowledge of current special education regulations, issues, and related laws.
  • Knowledge of the use of Current DSM‑VTR.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and Instructional programs.
  • Knowledge of alternative education programs and placements.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication and human relations skills with students, staff members, parents, and administrators.
