Permanent Building Substitute Teachers will be assigned to a school for the entire academic year, replacing teachers on a daily or long‑term basis. They are responsible for ensuring the continuation of all learning activities in the classroom.
General StatementThe substitute teacher replaces the regular teacher on either a daily or long‑term basis and is therefore responsible for the continuation of all learning activities in the classroom. They are expected to understand human growth and development, be knowledgeable about what is to be taught, and demonstrate competence in the basic skills of reading, writing, and mathematics or in whichever subject area they are assigned.
They must effectively communicate with students, establish a positive classroom climate, maintain discipline, and inform the teacher they are replacing about progress and any issues that arose.
- Demonstrate facility in the skills of reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the subject to be taught.
- Apply knowledge of human growth and development to the teaching‑learning process.
- Implement instructional plans left by the classroom teacher or building administrators using appropriate techniques.
- Communicate effectively with students.
- Help students develop positive self‑concepts.
- Establish a positive learning environment.
- Employ effective classroom management techniques.
- Communicate with the replaced teacher and building administrator to ensure seamless learning flow.
- Regularly required to sit for extended periods to view and operate computer equipment, and to stand for extended periods to assist students and/or staff.
- Required to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, and kneel frequently.
- Required to reach with hands and arms frequently.
- May occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Requires vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- Minimum a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college.
- Valid Connecticut teacher certificate in the subject area required for long‑term assignments.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching the subject area(s) and managing the classroom to ensure learning occurs in the absence of regular staff.
- Flexibility in work assignments and ability to handle a broad range of tasks.
- Evidence of ability to work cooperatively with administrators, teachers, and educational assistants.
- Superior oral and written communication skills.
